Word came down early today from Joel Sherman that Kevin Millwood has apparently rejected the offer of a minor league deal from the Yankees.

Mr. Millwood has been a popular point of discussion here during TYA’s opening week: Mike kicked the tires on Millwood and Edwin Jackson and I posited that Millwood might be a good idea at this point. At the beginning of offseason, I balked at the idea of giving Millwood a Major League deal, but warmed up a bit to it on Friday. He’s gotten attention from the Indians as well as the Yankees, but Sherman gave no indication that the Indians are willing to go to a Major League deal and we haven’t heard anything about Millwood and the Indians since Februrary 12th and they were unwilling to sign Millwood to a one year, $4MM deal. Because of that, the Yankees should feel no pressure to offer up a Major League deal.

Millwood is probably a better bet than or or or , but that doesn’t mean the Yankees should just cave to his demands and throw money at their problem. Hold out for a minor league deal, Mr. Cashman and Co.

I understand he is no longer a “good” pitcher but I don’t get the hate, he is a serviceable number 5 and his peripherals last year weren’t much worse and in some cases better than his previous year (200 inning) which looked better ERA wise. He is for sure better than Colon and Mitre, I would bet dollars to doughnuts he is better than Garcia and more stable than Nova.

I wouldn’t be all jazed to give the man 5 or 6 million on a major league deal but if he won’t take anything but a major league deal what’s the harm in trying for 3 or 4 million, is he really going to kill us to give him a try as 4th or 5th starter?

When the choices are a rookie, a vet who didn’t pitch last year, a vet who was a long reliever, a vet who pitched 145 innings in a weaker division or a starter with back to back 190+ inning seasons I bet on the latter to be the most successful and least risk.

If you get 200 innings out of a 5th starter wouldn’t you take it?

  2. Thanks for mentioning Edwin Jackson – I think he’s a perfect fit for the Yankees 4 or 5 spot. the question is, what will it take to get him? he can’t be that expensive – isn’t he a free agent this fall?
