Phil Hughes rehab tour begins tomorrow
For any New York locals who are looking for a fun Fathers Day activity, the short-season Staten Island Yankees are playing their hated rival Brooklyn Cyclones in Coney Island at 5 PM tomorrow. Not only is it a great opportunity to catch Cito Culver, Mason Williams, Angelo Gumbs, and a host of other prospects, but it will also be ‘ first rehab start.
Hughes has reportedly looked good in extended spring training, and has been hitting the low-90′s with his fastball. I won’t be able to make it myself, but if anyone does go to the game (I believe a few TYA writers may be in attendance) feel free to report back on how Hughes and the prospects are looking. Hopefully, Hughes has his fastball back after his long respite from pitching, and will be able to make it back into the Yankee rotation soon.

The Staten Island Yankees’ games are no longer broadcast on the radio. But the Brooklyn Cyclones games are. You can catch the broadcast online at http://www.live365.com/stations/wkrb?site=pro. I’m listening now. Game just started.

First inning against Hughes:
Infield single
Line single, first and third
K looking (I think it was looking; my attention wavered)
K looking
BB to load the bases.
K swinging
0-0 end of one. 25 pitches for Hughes.

1-2-3 for Hughes in the second:
Ground out.
Fly out

Third inning for Hughes:
Groundout on the first pitch
Fly out on the first pitch
K looking on 4 pitches.
So after the 25-pitch first inning, he has an 8-pitch second inning and a 6-pitch third inning (39 pitches total), and has retired his last 7 batters.

2-0 Staten Island as Hughes pitches in the 4th:
K swinging
Foul pop to catcher
K looking
10 in a row, 7 Ks in 4 innings, 54 pitches. The Mets announcer mentioned that the Cyclones strike out a lot, including 13 times in their last game.

Ketchup won the hot dog race.
Hughes in the 5th:
Fly out to right
Home run
And they take Hughes out. As they went to the commercial break, they said he threw 59 pitches, but when they came back they said it was 64.
I guess we’ll hear more about how fast he was throwing and how his arm felt.
