It’s Friday night, and the Rockies are wOBAing (.323 as team, ninth best in baseball) their way into town! For those unfamiliar with the National League, the Rockies have some big names on the roster including Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, Todd Helton, and (former Yankee slugger) Jason Giambi. Ubaldo Jimenez hasn’t shown the same level of dominance as he did last year, but a guy with his talent is always capable ruining my fantasy picks throwing a solid game. Use this as your open thread for the evening!

Tonight’s lineup:

Brett Gardner, LF
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, DH
Russell Martin, C
Eduardo Nunez, SS

And on the mound:
RHP A.J. Burnett (7-5, 4.05) vs. RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (2-7, 4.68)

I wonder if the rest of baseball thinks of Giambi as a former A.

He did spend seven years in pinstripes…

  2. Professor Longnose says:

They’re making Jimenez throw a lot of pitches. First three hitters have all had 3 ball counts, and 2 have walked.

  3. Professor Longnose says:

    Uh-oh. Bad A.J. showed up.

  4. Professor Longnose says:

DP! Burnett avoids catastrophe, and settles for eh.

  5. Professor Longnose says:

9-pitch walk to Granderson to open the third. Jimenez is up to 48 pitches.

  6. smurfy says:

Hey, Professor. Giambi was so happy to see us, we regret the enthusiasm, you reckon?

    Another walk.

  7. smurfy says:

Curtis knows how long the throw from center is. Plenty of arm, but hard to be 100% accurate.

    Professor Longnose Reply:

Man, Granderson just stole that run.

  8. Professor Longnose says:

I always root against ex-Yankees. I’m just rotten that way. But I liked Giambi when he was here. I even stuck by him when he was in that horrific slump. He was one of the first guys who made me understand the arguments from the sabermetricians about walks that I was hearing for the first time around then.

    smurfy Reply:

Yeah, amazing OBP, 400 for his 7 years with the Yanks! I liked him, too, except for his first basemanship. Kay quotes Tracy as saying Jason is a pleasure on the team, but I would think he’s be a DH.

    [Reply]

    Professor Longnose Reply:

    Ha ha ha ha ha.

Giambi was a pretty lousy first baseman. Over that 7 years I got so used to lousy fielding at first, I forgot what good fielding looked like.

One of Cash’s smartest moves, getting ownership to stretch for Tex. Invaluable, his defense. Solidifies everyone else’s.

  9. Professor Longnose says:

Right at Cano with the infield in. Phew!

  10. smurfy says:

damn, they are smacking AJ around, sure enough. He better change something.

    [Reply]

    Professor Longnose Reply:

    His arm? Or his brain?

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

Heh, heh! Why wouldn’t they pull him, and have him start in 3 days? Earlier, even, I see he’s up to 62 pitches. Damn. 10 in the 1st!

    [Reply]

    Professor Longnose Reply:

He got out of the bases-loaded jam, but I’d punt him off the mound the next baserunner he gives up, unless it’s with two out.

  11. Professor Longnose says:

    Happy birthday, Phil Hughes!

  12. Professor Longnose says:

Burnett won’t be around much longer, but the question is, will he blow the game here before he leaves? Big at bat with the bases loaded.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

AJ had better come in with a new battleplan. Game’s still in reach, having twice found grounders to save himself.

    [Reply]

  13. smurfy says:

Yeah, Flash was right: Tulo hit a fastball that was up. That’s what they have been teeing off on. Haven’t seen too many 2-seamers.

    [Reply]

  14. Professor Longnose says:

He doesn’t have it! Get him out of there!

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

You know, now I would leave him in to try to right his ship. This lineup is so strong, they would chew up the bullpen.

    [Reply]

    Professor Longnose Reply:

They’re chewing Burnett up already. OUT!

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

Ok, Buddy Cannonfodder, you’re up. Get it hot!

  15. Professor Longnose says:

Meanwhile, how about a HR from Teixeira?

    Steve S. Reply:

Tex looked awful that AB. Missed those splitters by a foot.

    [Reply]

  16. smurfy says:

Boy, Tex was way off that pitch. AJ had a nice 2-seamer to strike out the 1st batter.

    Yeah, 2-seamer got Cargo.

    [Reply]

  17. Steve S. says:

Come on AJ, strike out 4 batters this inninh.

(Damn, and Kay just said it)

    [Reply]

  18. smurfy says:

“Burnett strikes out four in the sixth!”

    That’s keeping after it.

    [Reply]

    Professor Longnose Reply:

    Ok, I was wrong.

I’ve got him in the otteoneu yankeeanalyst fantasything, so at least I get some points from the Ks.

    [Reply]

  19. Professor Longnose says:

It’s academic anyway, because the Yankees aren’t going to score.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

If AJ can pitch another clean inning, I’ll bet they rally.

    [Reply]

    Professor Longnose Reply:

I was wrong about Burnett. I’m hoping I’m wrong about the hitting.

    [Reply]

  20. smurfy says:

Mistake. AJ got it rolling, they oughto encourage that.

  23. Steve S. says:

That’s the best I’ve seen Logan this year

  24. Professor Longnose says:

Wow. Nelson had to botch that play twice for Posada to beat it out.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

    yeah, double-botched it.

    [Reply]

  25. smurfy says:

Man, two bobbles, and he still almost got Jorge!

    [Reply]

  26. Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, Logan looked good, but 4 batters is hardly a significant sample, Kay.

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

    You have to start somewhere.

    [Reply]

  27. Steve S. says:

My goodness, Nelson bobbled that ball twice and Posada still JUST beat it out.

    [Reply]

  28. Professor Longnose says:

They’ve been letting Jimenez off the hook all game. It’s time to strike.

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

I’m not sure where his velocity has gone. Since he’s been in the bigs he averaged 95-96, and now he’s topping out at that. He must have some kind of injury he is pitching through or something.

    [Reply]

    Professor Longnose Reply:

Could be. He doesn’t look like the same guy from the first half last year.

    [Reply]

  29. Goose54 says:

I don’t know how anyone could watch Posada reach on an E4 and not say that he’s absolutely dogging it.

OK, we got the bloop. Now we need a blast from Jorge or Martin

Jeter says he doesn’t know when he’ll be back, according to an article in the NY Post.

What an awful re-signing. He’s sooooo lucky he didn’t collect his 3000th hit last year or he’d have been let go. He must think he’d be a goner after this season if he re-signed for this season only.

I say put him on waivers after this season and see who claims him.
