Open Thread-Who’s next?
The title of this thread can be read three different ways, which was why it appealed to me. Who’s the next Yankee to get hit by a pitch? Who’s going to make the next start in place of Colon? Who’s going to be the next Yankee pitcher (Hughes/Soriano/Joba/Colon) to go on the DL for an extended period? So many questions, so few answers.
For the question of who’s our next starter, it appears the Yanks will leave Hector Noesi in AAA for the time being and promote someone else, most likely DJ Mitchell or . As to the other questions, your guess is as good as mine. Maybe Dr. Galea can inject some stem cells into Phil’s shoulder, Soriano/Joba’s elbows, and Bartolo’s hammy and they’ll all be as good as new. In local sports action you’ve got the Mets playing the Pirates tonight, and MLBN is showing the Cards @ the Brewers. Use this thread to discuss whatever you like.

Definitely one of my all-time favorite albums. Saw them live Jul4, 1976, in D.C. Now off to listen to “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” which maybe Hal and Randy should listen to before giving any long-term contracts to relievers not named Mo.

Wasn’t 76 the year that some fans got trampled at a show in Cincinnati?

I saw a report today that Noesi was going to be recalled tomorrow. Has there been word from the Yankees this won’t be the case?

We won’t know until tomorrow, when they see how Colon feels. But Girardi was alluding to bringing up one of the AAA pitchers in the post game, and I heard (from a good source via Twitter) they’re not looking at Noesi. We’ll see what happens.

On numbers alone you would think David Phelps has the best shot to be called up if they are leaning away from Noesi. Numbers are far less important than how you achieve the numbers though, and I haven’t seen him pitch any games this season.

A source who has been briefed on the specifics of the labor discussions says that the players’ union has indicated that it is open to the idea of two 15-team leagues, but that the whole plan still hasn’t been talked through or presented to the owners.
“I’d still say the odds of it happening are less than 50-50,” one source said.
A sticking point involves interleague play. Because of the odd number of teams in each league, it is possible that a team in contention late in the season will have to be playing its final games in interleague play.
One of the biggest issues that would have to be resolved in any realignment resulting in two 15-team leagues is which of the National League teams would switch to the American League.
Two highly ranked executives believe the Houston Astros would be a possibility, because a switch to the AL for Houston would foster a rivalry between the Astros and the Texas Rangers.

Buster hears that the Astros may shift to the AL, and we wind up with 2 15 team leagues. A 30 team sport with 6 divisions really should have 5 teams in each division.
But I don’t like the idea of eliminating divisions at all. Baseball is a regional sport, always has been, and local rivalries are ingrained in the fabric of the game. Having 5 teams make the playoffs removes all the subtext of those rivalries. I hate that idea.

I’d love to see the Astros allowed to use a DH with the very HR friendly field we have here, but for the forseeable future they will be beaten to death with that pitching staff.

I am probably wrong, but I always thought you can’t recall a player you just sent down for ten days or something like that. If that is the case then he can’t get called back up until the beginning of next week, but I probably have that all wrong.

There is an injury exception to that rule I believe.

Yup, I’m pretty sure that Colon going on the DL would allow the Yankees to recall Noesi, regardless of the length of time he has been down.

If the injury is very slight, they may not DL Colon figuring he can come back before 15 days. But they’ll need a pitcher, and the rule will apply. So everyone may be a little correct here.

I can’t see a scenario under which he isn’t DL’d. They won’t want to rush him, and with a pitcher very few things are more important than his legs. As effective as he has been they’ll want him 100%.
