That ball was spooky: Bartolo thought he had it, intercepted just by second, but the runner was arriving. Thank goodness Nunie HAD THE PRESENCE OF MIND to throw to first. Whew.
When I saw the runner hit second, I thought it was a hit. But Nunez is supposed to be mostly concerned with the batter-runner when there’s two out.
I’d put it that the hitter can be expected to hit base last. Nunie could see the runner better than we, so it likely wasn’t such a surprise to him. Tha liner seemed slow, though. Musta been a soft spinner.
Yeah, Nunez seems to be getting his sea legs in the field.

Did you see that article (here or RAB) that Swish has a +8 or so UZR for his right field play? He tries hard, has ben getting good jumps, but I consider him slow nd rather unreliable, tho I love it when he succeeds.
He gets it done. Sometimes he doesn’t look great, but it’s rare when he actually misplays the ball. At least, that’s the way it looks to me, without the numbers.

Bartolo looked slyly disconcerted with being pulled. I had seen the shot of Sori warming, but I thought Bartolo was doing it. I’m sure he desires a win, but it’s probably for the best.

I love Frankie, and his defense is much better than he gets credit for, and he has been getting a lot of (clutch) hits, but he doesn’t have the firepower, bat speed, to deal with Rodney. Lucky to walk, and congrats on the at bat!

Boston draws Seattle’s 1-2 punch of Felix Hernandez and Michael Pineda Saturday and Sunday respectively, hahahaha, so they better win tomorrow night.

Now is the time to get Jake Peavy.
Yanks 8 games ahead of the Angels for the wildcard, only one game behind Boston for the division.
‘Say they got Peavy before 8/17. They could start him right away against Kansas City 8/17 as he’s scheduled to start tomorrow night, Oakland 8/23, and Baltimore 8/28. He avoids facing the Red Sox which is good cuz then they don’t get a first-hand look at him.
Peavy posted 7 IP 6 H 3 ER 0 BB 2 SO vs. Boston 5/30 for a win and has pitched at least 6 innings in 6 of his last 7 starts.
I knew what I was talking about re: Nova when 80-90% of the commenters wanted him removed from the rotation in favor of Hughes, I know what I’m talking about re: Peavy.
Duh, they don’t want to pay $21 million for Peavy, even if he resurges. Yeah, Peavey looked good against us, but not $21 mmm worth.
You were louder then 99.9% of people, you mean. We all thought Nova was good, but wanted to see what Phil could do.
You’ve written about Peavy in at least three separate threads over the last two days.
Peavy is due $24.5M in 2012 ($17M contract for 2012 plus $4M buyout of 2013 team option plus $3.5M remaining for 2011). He’s not better than AJ Burnett and he’s certainly more expensive than Burnett. The Yankees gain nothing by adding Peavy.

Stop already? Who the hell are you to tell me to stop? I don’t want 7 or 8 years of Sabathia or 4 to 6 years of C.J. Wilson. How ’bout you tell me why Peavy a former Cy Young Award winner who just turned 30 on May 31 making too much money for the Chi-Sox to keep beyond this year, who has pitched at least 6 innings in 6 of his last 7 starts, is healthy again, who’d be the Yanks #2 from hereonin (or the surer bet to be that over Garcia or Nova), who could be the Game 2 or 3 starter in the ALDS, the Game 1 or 2 starter of the ALCS or WS, who’d cost ZERO top prospects, wouldn’t be good for the Yanks besides the money? You want 4 or more years of C.J. Wilson? The dude isn’t signing for 1-3 years. You want old fat Sabathia in 2016-18/19? The dude is opting out and isn’t asking for 5 or 6 years – 7 minimum. Who’s in the Yanks rotation next year besides A.J. “Ace In Salary Only” Burnett? Probably not Garcia or Colon. Sabathia isn’t 100% to return. Nova and Hughes are not locks. Banuelos will probably need at least another half-season if not a full-season before he competes for the fifth starter job which he then has to keep.
Peavy would add this to the Yanks: Burnett out of the rotation, Colon and Hughes fighting to stay in the rotation since the six-man rotation isn’t lasting long, edge Colon for his nice start today. Sabathia/Garcia/Peavy/Colon or Nova in the ALDS (definitely one on standby for the other in case the starter is bombed and either wasn’t needed for Game 1, 2, or 3), no Burnett or Hughes starting any postseason games. I wouldn’t have either on the postseason roster as I’d have Nova.
$3.5M to Peavy this year is chickenfeed considering the Yanks will have blown $11.75M on Igawa, Marte, and Felicano who won’t throw a single pitch for the Yanks plus another $13.1M on Posada for $24.85M on next to nothing. Peavy is due only $17M next year. The $4M buyout is if he doesn’t have a good enough 2012 to be brought back for 2013. If he posts 15-20 wins and a sub 4 ERA next year, you bring him back for 2013. So he’s a $17M gamble. Better than $175M on Sabathia at 260 or whatever pounds at age 31 or who knows how much on Wilson.
Burnett is better than Peavy? HAHAHAHAHA. Are you on drugs? Who has the Cy Young Award? Who couldn’t pitch five innings to qualify for a win up 13-1, Peavy or Burnett? Who is the one being talked about as possibly being demoted to the pen, Peavy or Burnett? Who is the one most writers, bloggers etc. talk about being one of the worst contracts for a pitcher in MLB history (besides it being the fifth biggest), Peavy or Burnett? Who is the one you’d rather have in Game 2 of a postseason series if the Yanks lost Game 1, Peavy or Burnett? Who’d you rather have start a postseason game where the Yanks are down a game or more, or could be eliminated? I’d choose Hughes over Burnett, that’s how bad Burnett sucks.

Louder then 99.9%? Hahahaha. Most of you including you wanted to see what 0-3 and 10+ ERA in 3 GS Hughes could do at the expense of 8-4, 4.12 ERA Nova staying in the rotation, nice spin job bro. Most of you including you wrote off Nova as lucky, a fluke etc. and constantly harped on Hughes’ 2010 as if 2010 was/is an extension of 2011 when it’s not. Ok then Wang’s 2009 was an extension of his 2008 which was cut short by an unlucky injury and Wang did wayyy more for the Yanks in 2007-2008 than Hughes did. Wang had a pair of 19-win seasons sandwiched by two nice half-seasons where one was his rookie season as a callup and the other was an ace’s ace-like season ended by a horrible injury. If Wang has the flu and misses his start against Houston 6/15/08, maybe he goes on to have another 19-win season and if he did that, the 2008 Yanks make the postseason. That injury killed the 2008 Yanks. And yet Wang was tossed after 2009.
Why not pay $21M for Peavy?
First you’re assuming he won’t be good enough to have his 2013 club option picked up by saying he’d cost $21M ($17M salary + $4M buyout) when he could be. He just turned 30 on May 31 and is a former Cy Young Award winner. He is healthy again and would enhance the Yanks winning this year’s World Series. He’d be a one-year risk like this: he sucks in 2011, he’s bought out or he’s great in 2011 but sucks in 2012. He’d be a two-year blessing if he posts 15-20 wins and a sub 4 ERA in 2012 and does the same in 2013. If Sabathia signs elsewhere, Peavy is the ace. Peavy is insurance against Sabathia leaving and leverage over Sabathia if the Yanks win this year’s World Series. If the Yanks win it all this year with Peavy and Sabathia opts out and wants no less than 7 or 8 years, the Yanks could wish Sabathia the best and figure they got two World Series championships in three years with Sabathia. Let’s see Sabathia do that with whoever he signs with.
Second, the Yanks clear Igawa’s $4M and Marte’s $3.75M ($4M – $250K buyout) after this year for $7.75M cleared letting go of pitchers who won’t throw a single pitch for the 2011 Yankees. If Feliciano doesn’t throw a single pitch for the 2011 Yankees, the Yankees would’ve spent $11.75M on THREE pitchers who would not have thrown a single pitch for them and $13.1M on the worst year by Posada, so they can spend $17M or $21M on Peavy next year. If Peavy is acquired this year, he’s worth more than all three on the first pitch he makes as a Yankee (provided Feliciano doesn’t pitch for the Yanks this year.)
Last, Peavy would instantly be the Yanks #2 or #2-like #3 if you want to say Garcia or Nova is the #2. He’s definitely better than Burnett, Hughes, and Colon. He’s long-term better than Garcia and a surer bet to be solid next year than Nova (as much as I like Nova, I won’t annoint him the next Chien Mien Wang yet) or Hughes. I would rather be on the hook for Peavy for one year than be on the hook for Wilson for 3 or more years if Wilson sucks next year.
Btw it is time the Yanks start having Soriano and/or Robertson close some games because right now Mo isn’t hacking it. At least have them close some games for the time being. Three-run homerun? He’s not done but he’s losing it. Most of his 2011 saves have been laborious and he’s blown too many saves this year. Next year should be his last and the only way I bring him back after next year is if it’s for 2013 only and he takes say $10M (a $5.5M paycut.)

Any mention of replacing Rivera with Soriano/Robertson is just absurdity and deeply weakens your credibility as a reasonable person. I don’t care to debate with someone that is this reactionary.
Um, first off I never said replace Mo as the closer, I said have Soriano and Robertson close some games from hereonin. I should’ve said “to conserve Mo” since he’s been struggling, but I thought I inferred that.
Second I don’t care what you think of Peavy and why is he not good since you won’t say why he isn’t good besides throwing out one stat. ‘Seen his last 7 starts? I’ve watched his last two. You? Why is he “not good”? Stop acting like a child who thinks his word is law and say why Peavy isn’t good. I laid out my argument to get him and all you can say is “I don’t care how good you think he is, he is not.”
He is not $21M, he is $20.5M through 2012, $42.5M if he has a #2 like 2012, $24.5M if he’s not good enough to be brought back. The Yanks get two postseasons out of him (this year and next.) The Yanks wouldn’t bring him back for $22M if he was any less than a #2.

Here’s a simple yes or no question:
Who would you rather have start a game with the Yanks down in a postseason series or facing elimination, Peavy or Burnett, if it had to be one or the other? If you say Burnett, your credibility as a reasonable person is less than mine for you to say Burnett is better than Peavy.

In fact, I would LOVE to contribute an entry on why the Yanks should get Peavy not only for this year but for next and possibly beyond. Heck, I’d even stop talking about him if I was afforded that opportunity.
Getting Peavy means Burnett and Hughes are out of the rotation and left off the postseason roster. There. There’d be no use for either in the postseason if the Yanks didn’t get Peavy or anyone else for the rotation with Nova/Colon. One of them (Burnett or Hughes) will not be on the Yanks ALDS roster, make book on that.

When did I say that? Pull it up. If I said it, I said cuz it was April. I certainly didn’t say Hughes should stay in the rotaiton after he was removed from it after his 0-3, 10+ ERA start.
Early April hmmmmm…Sabathia/Hughes/Burnett/Garcia, the Yanks keeping Colon on ice to start if he’s needed. Different scenario, nice failed try to make it like I didn’t want Nova all along. I never said I wanted him all along, I said Nova should’ve stayed in the rotation when talk of Hughes replacing him brewed, so bringing up whatever I said about him in April is you grasping straws. I was right and you, if you called for Hughes to take his spot, and all the other “2010 Hughes” parrots were ultimately wrong if Hughes is removed from the rotation which he should be after Colon’s start today. The Yanks can’t go with a six-man rotation for long, even Sabathia said he wouldn’t like it long-term in so many words.
