After two long days, we now have 30 new potential members of the Yankee organization to talk about. I’ll have some big-picture thoughts tomorrow afternoon, while the remainder of the draft is conducted, but for now here is a summary table, plus my preliminary notes on the first 30 picks.

From what I heard none of these players will probably top the 1 million mark in bonus which is surprising considering how deep the draft is. At this point in time I am not impressed with the strategy the Yankees have taken in not taking more “consensus” and being more liberal with their draft spending which in all honesty is the cheapest way to go in the long run.

Would you rather believe the Yankees whose annual scouting budget is probably in the tens of millions annually or a bunch of sites (like BA, for example)whose combined annual scouting expenses probably isn’t 1/10 of that and have to rely a handful of part-timers and the kindness of scouting tidbits from wherever they can get it (when Theo or some other GM feels like giving them some crumbs)?

  3. Tom Swift says:

Other than Bird, who projects to play elsewhere, no catchers. More surprisingly, no SSs. In fact, no middle infielders. Coincidence, or did an edict come out f/ the front office that this draft was to focus on power bats at the corner spots?

  5. Joe in NYC says:

I’m as concerned as Tom — no infielders, and thus, no SS. Worrisome. Or is the organization’s plan to use the international market to identify infielders?

    EJ Fagan Reply:

I wrote about this in a post scheduled for noon, but my theory is that they loaded up on SS and CFers in the last draft, so they decided to go for corner bats, an organizational weakness at all levels.
