Lots of Yankee news to get you guys caught up with, so lets jump right into it. First, Andrew Marchand that Bartolo Colon is heading to the 15 day DL with Chris Dickerson being recalled to take his place. As much as that sucks, it’s probably the best case scenario when dealing with a hamstring injury. Hector Noesi has been recalled from Scranton to replace Amaury Sanit (elbow). Ken Davidoff reports he is expected to pitch out of the bullpen, not replace Colon in the rotation.  That leaves David Phelps, Adam Warren, or D.J. Mitchell as the most likely candidates to take Big Bart’s next start, which would be this Thursday facing the Rangers. But then this morning that Noesi IS in the mix to replace Bart, so we’ll have to wait and see how this shakes out. There are no off days for Colon’s next two turns through the rotation, so whoever they select will almost certainly also take the ball facing the Reds on 6-21. After that they have 2 off days, and assuming his rehab goes well they can work him back into the rotation sometime thereafter. If you’re looking for a positive from Colon’s injury, we have all wondered how and if his arm would hold up over the course of the season. A 2-3 week break now, followed by another week off for the All Star break in early July could go a long way to keeping him strong down the stretch.

Here’s a fun fact from the Yankee Twitter feed:

New York Yankees
New York Yankees
Grandy and Tex both have 19-plus homers through NY’s first 62 games. Last pair of Yanks to do that? Maris/Mantle in 1961.

In other news, Russell Martin took BP this morning and declared himself fit to play. Thank goodness, because I’m not sure I could take another day of Frankie behind the dish. Alex is back as well, after leaving yesterday’s game early with (what else) a HBP.

Now that you’re caught up on all things Yankee, here’s the lineup courtesy of Sam Borden over at LoHud:

Jeter SS
Granderson CF
Teixeira 1b
Rodriguez 3b
Cano 2b
Swisher RF
Posada DH
Martin C
Gardner LF

Freddy Garcia on the bump, looking to bounce back from that hideous performance against the Red Sox. GO YANKS!!!!!

It’s hard to imagine there not being a step down from Bartolo, but anyone else kinda excited to see one of Noesi/Warren/Mitchell/Phelps get a couple of starts?

    T.O. Chris Reply:

I would be excited to see Phelps make a start/starts. I don’t see Mitchell as anything but a future reliever, and I’m split on what I think Noesi can do in the rotation. So given that belief I Phelps is the only one I could see being a real starter.

    Steve S. Reply:

I agree. I think Mitchell and Noesi are future relievers. Phelps should be a mid rotation arm somewhere, although it probably won’t happen here.

    T.O. Chris Reply:

If Phelps can make a decent start or two, coupled with what he’s done in the minors this season he may elevate himself in trade talks. He obviously isn’t going to be a center peice to a package, but he could be involved in a deal for a middle rotation arm. I still believe that Francisco Liriano is a great buy low option at this point, his numbers aren’t great, and he comes with a decent amount of risk but the potential rewards could be well above the cost at this point.

    Steve S. Reply:

I love Liriano at the right price, but that price does not include any of my top 5 (Montero, Banuelos, Betances, Sanchez, Heathcott) prospects.

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

Without question. Montero was never in play for Liriano, and at this point Francisco has completely played his way out of being worth Banuelos or Betances. I’m not as high on Heathcott as some, but I can’t see the Twins wanting him anyway since they have a fairly deep outfield. I’d put Nova in a trade for Liriano in a heartbeat, Romine would be a perfect secondary peice but they seem to be set at catcher even without Mauer. Nova and Phelps would be a good starting point, but I’m not sure what kind of 3rd prospect would be neccesary to add in. The Yankees lack any real position player worth note, that I’d be willing to include.

It has to be a package I can live with if/when he gets shoulder surgery.

  2. T.O. Chris says:

Granderson has impressed me with how well he snaped out of this little funk he was in. The difference in good players and great players is limiting slumps, if he can stay hot for good stretches and snap out of slumps this fast he’s a real MVP threat.

  3. T.O. Chris says:

Only Posada could make hitting nothing but singles look like a scorching hot streak.

    smurfy Reply:

maybe he should try to stretch it a little more.

    T.O. Chris Reply:

I haven’t seen a single one he could have turned into a double, for the most part they have just been solid shots in front of the right fielder.

Oh yeah, but when he hits ‘em so darned hard, he deserves it!

    Yawn.

What do you guys think the Yankee record would be if they only played the A’s, Indians, Orioles and Royals all 162 games of the year?

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

Yeah, like a light switch, the difference. As Duh says below, the Blue Jays look like they can’t pitch against the Red Sox.

  5. Duh, Innings! says:

EAT SHIT TORONTO BLUE JAYS!!! ‘Way to not show up against Boston this weekend. Are you taking money to pitch and hit so awfully??? At least they’re losing ground to the everyone ahead of them (7.5 games behind Boston after today.)

I wonder if Boston is frustrated right now in that they swept the Yankees, are 8-1 against them this season, and will have won what? nine or ten games straight after today and they’re still only two games ahead of the Yankees. If Yankees Vs. Red Sox was a boxing match we’d be in Round 6 of 15 with no clearcut winner.

Re: Colon. His replacement could make as little as four starts if (Colon) returns 7/18 (fifth game after the All-Star Break.) I’d go with Noesi for two starts 6/16 and 21 and if he does well, let him start 7/2 and 7/9 although I’d start Noesi asap after 6/21 if he pitches really well (to me 6 or more IP and 2 or fewer runs.) You hope for 3-1, 2-2 at worst in those starts (4-0 would be a gift.)

    Steve S. Reply:

Don’t forget Hughes. He throws his first rehab on Tuesday, he could be ready after the ASB if Bartolo has any setbacks.

    2 starts minimum, 4 max.

    [Reply]

    Duh, Innings! Reply:

Yeah, but will Hughes be as good as Colon has been all year and Nova has been his last two starts? He better be.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Yankees do with Hughes if Nova keeps pitching like he has his last two starts and Garcia has pitched most of this year.

  6. T.O. Chris says:

That’s reasonable Steve, he has several red flags, and on top of that has a sky high walk rate this year. I would want it to be a 3 for 1 deal to limit the damage if he flames out, Nova makes a lot of sense because he is major league ready, and his upside is no where near what Liriano can be. I wonder if they would want a position player for sure, or if they would be good with 3 arms. At this point with Brackman I’d throw him in, but who knows if they would even be willing to take on that headache.

    smurfy Reply:

They just showed highlights of Liriano’s no hitter thru the 5th, and I see what you like: great command as well as velocity. But Marte is a picture of my fear: two and a half seasons with maybe 15 innings pitched. Did he have surgery?

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

Huge difference in what a left bullpen peice, and a starter can give you.

Who are you refering to with the surgery? Liriano had TJ surgery like 2 or 3 years ago, but he hasn’t had his shoulder touched. The problem is how heavily he relies on his slider, and the fact that he has yet to throw a 200 inning season. He had the best slider in baseball last year, and his changeup is above average, he has ace level talent. I don’t think he will ever reach that level, but he could be more than a solid number 2 on this team for years to come. Plus he’s got years left, and a team friendly contract. He would probably slide into the 3 hole this year, and make a playoff rotation Sabathia, Burnett, Liriano for the first round.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

Yeah, I was wondering about his contract. But my fear is about “rotting in rehab” and the question was whether Marte had shoulder surgery, which I don’t remember.

That rotation sounds sweet, has tons o’ potential, but…

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

If they get a chance to trade for Liriano without giving up Montero, Banuelos, Betances, Sanchez, or Slade they have to do it. Under 30, top end rotation, left handed starters don’t come along very often.

I’m not sure if Marte had shoulder surgery or not. I want to say he did, but off the top of my head I can’t be certain. He probably won’t be coming back this season either way, I heard he might be back at the end of the season, but it’s not likely. His contract runs up this year too, so he’s probably seen his last game as a Yankee.

Marte was a failed trade/re-sign in many ways, but what a lot of people tend to forget is he pitched some huge innings in the playoffs in 09. When Hughes and Joba were dissapearing in the pressure, Marte and Robertson were stepping up big. In fact it’s fair to say without him we might not have won the WS.

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

Liriano is only making 4.3 million this season, and I believe he is locked up for 2 more seasons after this one.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

That is very cheap, two and a half seasons? Fantastic, but that’s just the length of Marte’s bum shoulder sweat.

No doubt, Marte showed talent, and Liriano has shown much, much more. I just fear Pavano-like situations, and wasting pitching prospects.

  7. smurfy says:

Russell should have taken today off, as well, for his back to heal more. He can barely turn his hips on swings, resulting in weak grounders. You gotta let spasmodic muscles rest.

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

His best option would have been the DL. One more day isn’t going to fix anything, he and the Yankees pretty much had to decide start today or go on the 15 dayer.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

You’re probably right that he needs some more time, but if he doen’t play, can’tthey 15 day DL him, and back date it to thelast time he played?

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

Yes, they could have placed him on the DL today and made it retroactive to 4 games ago, he would have then been elegible to come back in 10 days. However since he played today they have now lost that option. If his back acts up, or whatever after the game it starts today.

Martin is probably still dealing with his toe injury that initially put his bat in a slump, for that reason plus the back I would have DL’d him. The only problem then is you pretty much have to callup Montero and go with the worst backstop combo defensively ever.

  8. Duh, Innings! says:

Can Girardi let a starter finish an inning? Garcia gives up his first run of the game on a grounder then serves up a ho-hum single and to the pen Girardi goes with a 6-1 lead and two outs. Why don’t you tell Garcia he’s not good enough to get the final out of the seventh, Joe? Let him get the final out so a reliever begins the eighth. 102 pitches isn’t a ton for a soft-thrower like Garcia and what if Garcia gets a one-pitch out for 103 pitches total?

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

I guess Joe is thinking of Garcia, as well as the game. He may be a soft-tosser, but I was watching a bit his effort, and he puts it all into his 89 mph fastball, and doubtless his splitter and curve. (You don’t get many chces to see from the side, and you can’t see his face from behind.)

    [Reply]

    Duh, Innings! Reply:

The game? The Yankees had a 6-1 lead and the Indians had a man on first with two outs. Girardi goes to the bullpen too quickly. Let your veteran starter pitch seven full innings esp. when he gave up a soft run.

Garcia could give up a two-run homerun on the next pitch, but so could the next pitcher. And runs could always be given up after Garcia leaves the game.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

Yesterday, Joe got a reminder about pushing his aged pitchers too far, letting them wear out. What’s the big worry? As you said, it was a big lead.

It’s not 95+ but with his split Whelan could have a lot of success late in games out of the pen. He just has to make sure he can get into good counts to use it.

  13. smurfy says:

Yeah, Gardner deserves the “Player of the Game.”

Yeterday, he put down a perfect simple little bunt, good for a hit, rather than the sacrifice. The other day I said he just doesn’t have good instincts (when he stayed at third with the wild pitch going to the wall), but maybe he is over-thinking, just needs confidence. So afraid he’ll pull a boner, he gets tied up.

Anyone notice Michael Kay is saying his manageable/unmanageable crap again? Friday night he said the Yankees played an “unmanageable 3 hours and 32 minutes” as if being outdoors enjoying a game for three plus hours at the end of a workweek is a bad thing.
