Game Thread: Yanks vs Angels, 6/3/2011 (10:05PM EST on YES)
It’s a glorious Friday night, the weekend has finally arrived (thank the Mo almighty), and the Yankees are back in business after yesterday’s offday. The storylines du jour: A certain former backstop has been rightfully dropped to eighth in the batting order and Ivan Nova (4-3, 4.67) is the chump pitcher who’s been charged with opposing Jared Weaver (6-4, 2.10). Here’s your open thread…enjoy!
The starting lineup for the Bombers:
Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Russell Martin, C
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, DH
Brett Gardner, LF

How long has it been since Weaver won a game? 6 wins in a row to start the year, and down to a 6-4.

And he’s been great. It must be frustrating.
[Reply]
A 27-pitch 1-2-3 inning. You don’t see those too often.
[Reply]
Nova’s pitching himself out of the rotation as I write. If he gets another start, no way he faces the Red Sox with the off-day 6/6 (no duh.)

I agree, no chance he faces the Sox.

This inning is a perfect example of Nova’s biggest problem, he can’t finish anybody. He gets the first out and then has both Aybar, and Abreu with 2 strikes and less than 2 balls and can’t finish either. At a certain point his velocity doesn’t matter when he can’t finish anyone, and he isn’t turning out double plays like Wang.
[Reply]
Nice double by Rodriguez. Let’s get a run in.

Weaver is a good match for us in my opinion. He’s a strikeout pitcher but he isn’t a true power pitcher, he can touch 93 but he isn’t in that 95+ area we struggle with. He presents some problems for the lineup, but overall I think this teams assmebled bats fit well, for us to do well.

They have done pretty well against him in the past.

Robbie, please take a pitch. Please. And if you’re going to swing at slop like that, take it to right.
Nice rip, Russ.

He looks like he has been caught in between taking pitches and free swinging. He knows he needs to take pitches, but it seems like he’s getting frustrated with it. He does have a different strike zone than 90% of basebal players, it must be somewhat tough to instruct him. You don’t want to limit the fact he can his a lot more than most, but you also want him taking good approaches to the plate.

I’m rooting so hard for Jorge. Come on, Posada!

Yeah, pretty ugly.

I am really sick of Gardner’s act.’Takes a 3-2, 2-out, men on 1B and 2B pitch down the middle for a called third strike. He bats for walks cuz he can’t hit. Take away his OBP and he is a fourth outfielder.
The Yankees should trade him for an outfielder with power. I’ve had it with this guy. Total #9 hitter.

YES just showed the Angel who jumped on homeplate to celebrate his walkoff homerun then him being carted off the field from getting hurt when he did that. OOF.
Ahhhh Kimberly Jones time. Can’t she call games so I can look at her even more? And will YES let her wear friggin’ Cali clothes? Longsleeves and pants? Let the lady dress down! I wanna have sex with her, there I said it.

He seems to still have moments where he can make solid contact, but he is so inconsistent in doing so he doesn’t even have back to back ABs that look similar, let one stretches of good play. The FO eventually has to decide if they are OK with limited production at best from the DH spot in the lineup. If they make a move I can’t see it being done until July.

Those are two of the best back to back ABs Posada has had all year.

Gotta give credit where credit is due, and that was a nice job of getting out of a jam. But, not attacking Jeff Mathia is a gigantic problem, he’s too easily scared out of the strikezone. He won’t make it pitching scared.

You’re right on both counts: it could have been worse, and it should have been better.

Nova’s weird because he has a bunch of number 2 pitches, but he doesn’t have that one dominant pitch/number 1 pitch. His fastball should be that pitch, but it doesn’t seem to be as nasty as the velocity says it should be, and it’s nothing like Wang’s sinker. Because of that he’s going to have to learn to really pitch, change speeds, and learn how to pitch pitch just outside of the stikezone.
[Reply]
I flinched on that one, I thought he got a face full of baseball at first. He looks to be fine though.

He’s become a 125 pitch guy.
[Reply]
The Yankees average 1.2407 runs per game in the 7th, 8th, and 9th.
[Reply]
Nova has bought himself another start. 6 IP, 3 ER – the classic “quality start.” Too bad the offense is dead from the neck up, mainly Gardner.
Where is Cano?
[Reply]
Love those K/CS DPs. When the Yankees are in the field, anyway.

great pitch by robertson. great throw and tag..

How about a homer from Rodriguez? It’s about time.

Jeter is such a washed up bitch. He is sooooo lucky he didn’t re-sign for just a year or he’d be a goner after this year.
Cashman must privately shake his head at Shallow Hal and Hankenstein scaring themselves into giving Jeter three years and a player option for a fourth year.

8 innings, 3 hits. I stayed up until 1:00 in the morning to see 3 hits.

we could have used those 1.24 runs tonight..we are a cure for the angels, how did cash pass on downs for logan and ex met..
[Reply]
How many 6 or more IP, 3 ER or less starts are the Yankees offense gonna piss away? All these awful offensive showings will come back to haunt them in September.
Burnett’s 7 IP 1 H 1 ER start: LOSS
Garcia’s 6+ IP 2 ER vs. the Mets two weeks ago: LOSS
Nova 6+ IP 3 ER tonight: LOSS
This 31-24 team should be at least 36-19, is how I see it.
Jeter, Posada, Swisher, Gardner, and Cano are bums. Cano’s a bum because once again he is hitting like .270-something shit. Another guy I’m getting tired of. I fear he will never have a breakout season but he’ll want 7 or more years at $20M per. No dice. You’re a nice player, Robbie, but you’re not prime Jeter or A-Rod.

he was looking to hit one out in stead of taking that walk.you just knew if he threw a ball outside the zone he was swinging at anything..the 3 1 pitch was the tell tale sign he had his mind made up ..

I don’t think Cano will ever be an OBP guy. He’ll be a little of everything and that’s about it. Honestly, I’d trade him sometime in 2013 (his walk year as his 2012 and 2013 options will be picked up) before he asks for what I don’t think the Yankees should give him (7 years $140M.) As much as I try, I just can’t see prime Jeter or A-Rod in him. He’s a very good player and that’s it. No way would I pay him $20M or more a year unless he has two monster years 2012 and 2013 as I’m resigned to think he’s posting .285/.340/.500, 25-28 HR, 100-110 RBI (nice numbers but yet again, not a breakout ALMVP and Triple Crown-caliber season like say .345/.410/.580, 41 HR, 127 RBI.)

we can not have swisher and posada in the same lineup.

How about stud prospect Gary Sanchez getting sent to Tampa after having an attitude with Charleston.
