Gene Sapakoff of the Charleston Post and Courier just published a tremendous profile of Yankee prospect Slade Heathcott that is definitely required reading.  It gives a lot of information on the mysterious “character concerns” that plagued Heathcott leading up to the draft, shedding light on his troubled past, specifically his struggles with alcoholism and a broken family.  It also tells of his perseverance, and his desire to change his ways, finding religion and going to Alcoholics Anonymous (with the Yankees’ support).   In case you weren’t rooting for the kid enough already on the field, here’s a reminder that these are human beings, not just baseball players, that we are following.  And Slade has already been through more hardship than most human beings will go through in a lifetime.
