On every night throughout the year, one of the TYA writers will post a trivia question as the nightly open thread. The blog administrators will keep track of the winners, and the commenter with the most correct answers will win a prize that has yet to be decided upon. The answers will be posted in the following evening’s open thread.

Yesterday’s Question: It was recently announced that  will throw out the first pitch on opening day this season. I never fully appreciated Mussina during his playing days. The media, however, did. In addition to having been a perennial  candidate, Mussina received votes for MVP a number of times during his career. Can you name the seasons and where he placed in the vote?

Answer: 1992 (21), 1994 (20), and 2008 (19)

Today’s Question: Joe Girardi will begin his fourth season as Yankees manager tomorrow. His four years are an especially long tenure for a Steinbrenner(s) era Yankee manager. Name every Yankee manager since George Steinbrenner bought the team in 1973.

  2. Steve S. says:

The Yanks have had 3 managers in the 19 years since Buck Showalter was hired in 1992. I know George went through managers like crazy in his early years, but it should be noted that it hasn’t been true for close to two decades.

In addition to Houk,Virdon, Martin, Howser, Lemon, Michael, King, Berra, Piniella, Green, Dent, Merrill, Showalter, Torre and Girardi, several others have officially managed the Yankees since George bought the team and are so recognized by the official baseball records as having managed the Yankees and signed official lineup cards as the team’s manager.

In 1999, Don Zimmer was the manager of record for 36 games while Torre was recuperating from prostate cancer. (They went 21-15 with him as manager.)

Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson was the manager of record for a game vs the Mariners in 2008 after Joe Girardi got a one-game suspension for throwing his cap and kicking dirt on an umpire.

Yankees bench coach Don Mattingly was the manager of record for one game in 2007 when Joe Torre was suspended after a retaliatory inside pitch by Scott Proctor to Yuniesky Betancourt triggered an onfield fracas between the two teams.

In 2006, bench coach Lee Mazilli was the manager of record for an interleague game against the Washington Nationals after Torre was suspended one game for an incident in which Randy Johnson allegedly intentionally threw at Cleveland’s Eduardo Perez.

In 1988, third base coach Clete Boyer managed three games following Billy Martin’s suspension for allegedly kicking an umpire and throwing dirt at him during a dispute.in a game against the A’s.

I believe, based on the wording of your question, I get this one, yes? :-)
