Robbie goes boom!

Coming into Sunday’s game against the Royals the Yankee bats had completely vanished. The Bronx Bombers had scored only 13 runs in their last six games and, frankly, were lucky to be only 2-4 over that stretch, as opposed to 0-6. There’s too much talent on the Yankee offense for the team to struggle the way it had been indefinitely, but no one ever knows when a team wide slump will end. Fortunately for Yankee fans it may have ended today.

knocked a 390 foot double off the wall in right-center in the first at-bat of the game, setting a tone for the afternoon. In fact, the first Yankee reached base in each of the first three innings. Straight away it was clear that the Yankees were going to get to , it was just a question of when.

When turned out to be the third inning. First, the Yankees took a 2-1 lead on a single. Then, the team loaded the bases for . Quietly, Cano has been struggling. He had only one homer on the season coming into the game. He changed that with one swing. Robbie put one in the people with the bases loaded, giving the Yankees a 6-2 lead and adding some offensive pop to a lineup that desperately needed it. Later that inning clobbered a no-doubter into the stands in right in his first game back since injury. added a three run shot in the eighth inning to make sure the game was completely out of hand for Kansas City.

On the defensive side of the ledger the Yankees complimented their three homers with a solid outing from . Hughes went 6.2 innings on 115 pitches, allowing six hits, striking out seven and walking just one while giving up three runs. The last run was a solo home run to in the seventh inning. In total, Hughes looked good. The velocity on his fastball was registering in the mid nineties the entire game and he was mixing in his changeup to good effect. While Hughes is hardly out of the woods, it was difficult to ignore his solid performance. At the very least he’s earned another day in the rotation.

The Yankees couldn’t have picked a better time to bust out of their slump, provided today’s recent outburst carries into next week. The Bombers have an off-day on Monday and then have a three game set against the Rays in the Bronx. Tampa will send the always tough to the mound. The Yankees will counter with . The Bombers will need all the offense they can get.
