Open Thread- Home Run Derby
We’re just an hour away from the soothing sounds of Chris Berman MC’ing the HR Derby. I’m sure you’re all as excited as I am. In a new twist this year, turns out the home run derby is actually a race war! Uh, or something like that.
While you may be obliged to root for the American league, worry not about rooting against David Ortiz. Robinson Cano will have his father pitch to him.
Don’t forget to stay tuned after the derby for the celebrity softball game, the worst run celebrity event in sports! It was taped yesterday so you can see some photos here if you just can’t wait any longer .

Go, Cano! I hope he does better than Swisher did last year. Love the guy, but he was pathetic.

Personally, I would love to see a guys like Ichiro who can hit BP ball out the park. That is what this competition pretty much is.
[Reply]
I saw saw two people in the stamds standing next to each other holding up signs that had a target and said “HIT IT HERE. WIN A FREE OVEN MITT.”
[Reply]
I’d love to see Sam Fuld in the HR Derby. That would be hilarious.
[Reply]
Is anyone going to top A-Gon? 9 is pretty good.

They did a whole thing about how well the ball travels here. So I think someone will do more than 9 at some point.
[Reply]
Cano is pounding the ball. If he took the bad pitches, he’d win this easy.
[Reply]
Wow. Cano is killing it.
[Reply]
Man, Cano had some moon shots.
[Reply]
This is the one day of the baseball season when I miss the steroids. McGwire and Sosa did the derby way back when, and it seemed every other shot pushed 500 ft.

Maybe they should change it to a Bunt Derby.
[Reply]
Ooh, looks like Bautista won’t make it past the first round.
[Reply]
The NL is teh suxor

Professor Longnose Reply:

Been that way for a while.
[Reply]
Matt Kemp is bombing. Bautista may have more of a shot.
[Reply]
I can has Justin Upton?
[Reply]
If Ortiz hits 5 or more, Bautista is out.
[Reply]
Here’s hoping for Papi to break a leg, literally, in the next round
[Reply]
Wow. Cano’s already hit another 8, with 4 outs to go in round 2.
[Reply]
Cano’s beat Gonzalez’s first round.
[Reply]
So Robbie has stolen the show at this point.

He’s really on. And the 4 longest homers so far, too.

His 475 shot was projected at 495. That’s a bomb.
By the way, who the hell goes to a game to get in the pool?

Professor Longnose Reply:

That is kind of bizarre. Of course, in 110-degree heat, I might think different.

Arizona heat is not bad. I lived there for a while. They have almost no humidty, so it never feels as bad as it really is. Houston is the opposite, we have 90+% humidity daily damn near. In fact it’s easy to get heat stroke in Arizona because you never feel it coming on, and you hardly sweat.

Then they’re just showing off!

Haha probably. The drive home would be weird. You probably live 30+ minutes away, and you’re wet.
Fielder has to hit 13 to make this interesting, because I think Gonzalez has at least 7 in this round.

Professor Longnose Reply:

He’s capable of it. He had an amazing tie round.
[Reply]
T.O. Chris Reply:
July 11th, 2011 at 10:29 pm
Yeah, but 15+ home runs in 10 outs is harder than 5 home runs in 5 swings.
If I was him I wouldn’t have taken those last 2 swings in the tie breaker. Just making yourself more tired.
[Reply]
Professor Longnose Reply:
July 11th, 2011 at 10:34 pm
Well, he didn’t. The AL clinches. It’s Gonzalez vs Cano. And they’re probably both tired.
[Reply]
T.O. Chris Reply:

They both hit 20 so it’s even at least. I know the numbers start over, but they both spent the same amount of energy, or there about.
[Reply]
Down to Cano and Gonzalez now. They could’ve called this NL Vs AL East.
[Reply]
Robbie and his dad look almost nothing alike, except they have identical smiles.
[Reply]
You gotta get at least one phone number from that diving pool catch.
[Reply]
I don’t expect Cano to match Gonzalez in this round, but he did really well anyway.
[Reply]
Of course, I could be wrong. He’s still hitting them out.
[Reply]
He’s got 7. On pace to beat Gonzalez!
[Reply]
8! 6 outs to go.
[Reply]
WOW
[Reply]
9! But only 4 outs to go.
[Reply]
10! 1 more to tie.
[Reply]
11! One more for the win, and 4 outs to go!
[Reply]
He did it!
But he didn’t finish the round. Too bad. Might have had more.
[Reply]
I think Cano just borrowed Sabathia’s beast mode!
Well without Alex out for a month plus, Cano started his 4 hole hitting early!!

I usually don’t enjoy the home run derby, but I got a kick out of watching Cano and A-Gone go to work.

Yeah, I’ve never had more than passing interest, but this one was great.

Fun(ny) fact:
Jeter is second in BA among everyday Yankees not on the disabled list, third if Nunez is indeed the everyday 3B while A-Rod is out.
Cano .296
Nunez .279
Jeter .270
