Game Thread: Yankees at Tigers, 5/4/2011
Before the game, the Yankees announced that Phil Hughes received a cortisone shot to the shoulder, and he was feeling better, but he would still be out for 6-8 weeks. File this one under, “The Yankees are throwing stuff at Hughes to see what sticks.” If they can’t figure out what’s wrong with him, I don’t understand how they can assign a time frame. 6-8 weeks would put him back in the rotation in late June, early July.

The Yankees have wasted at least FIVE good or passable outings by starters and lost all those games:
Three Sabathia starts (his second and third starts and Tuesday night)
Burnett’s 8-inning outing
Garcia’s 7-inning 4-run outing last night
…and it’s only May 5th / 28 games into the season.
THIS HAS TO STOP STARTING TONIGHT!
You could seriously argue this 17-11 team should be 20-8 if they won just 3 of these 5 games.
I want to see them split the series for 18-11 then take at least 2 of 3 in Texas for 20-12, sweep the Royals (I don’t give a damn how well they’ve been playing so far, they’re the Royals) for 23-12, and take at least 2 of 3 at home against Boston for 25-13. That’s right 8-2 in their next 10.
