Report: Pettitte, Rangers nearing one year, $16 million deal
This is probably the toughest post I’ve ever had to write in my blogging career, and it makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. MLBTR has the unfortunate news:
“Sources close to Andy Pettitte say the big lefthander started working out at Texas’ spring training complex in Surprise, Arizona, this past week, and apparently intends to join his homestate Rangers in mid-May. Given the uncertainty in the Rangers’ rotation, with Brandon Webb still not ready for game action and the unproven Alexi Ogando installed as the fifth starter, signing Pettitte is seen as a crucial move for Texas as it looks to defend the American League pennant. MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan tried to reach General Manager Jon Daniels for comment, but he didn’t return the reporter’s phone calls.”
There is no way to spin this positively for the Yankees, who were convinced Pettitte would come back to them, and only them. On February 5, Pettitte told the world at his retirement press conference that he “didn’t have the hunger” anymore. However, he later went on to say that two weeks prior to making his decision, he began packing his bags and gearing up as though he would be going to spring training until he more or less talked himself out of it.
As slim a possibility as it seemed, many of us in Yankeeland were holding out hope that Pettitte might rejoin the Yankees by mid-season, but no one could ever have suspected that Pettitte would go back on his word and opt to sign with the team that knocked the Yankees out of the 2010 American League Championship Series.
Though Pettitte’s played in Texas before, losing Andy to the Astros doesn’t sting anywhere near as badly as losing him to a key American League rival. Additionally, the season just started; talk about obliterating the joy of a brand new year. While I’m sure many of us will maintain our fond memories of Andy, it’s going to be awfully hard to continue to think highly of the man who brought so much happiness to so many of us after essentially stabbing the entire fanbase in the back. We’ll miss you Andy, but now we’re also mad at you, and while you may ultimately try to color this as a business decision, we’re most definitely going to take it personally.

Hey Stunna,
This was actually an April Fool’s joke.
oh man you got me really good. i almost had a heart attack here lol j/k
I just about crapped myself…nice…not very funny though. No it was hilarious…don’t ever do that again. I would have had to burn all my memories of Andy. Gotta love comedians.
You guys really had me going, I was just about to get upset but thankfully clicked on the link for more. Whew!
well played, Mauer…
Ha ha
Larry, this was brilliant!
Had me going…Well played…
That one was a little too close for comfort. Well done.
We thoroughly discussed potential April Fools jokes. Other possibilities included, “Manuel Banuelos to join the Yankee bullpen” and “Ramiro Pena sold to Japan”
I would have been ecstatic if we received any sort of monetary compensation for Ramiro Pena
That’s a cruel joke… but nice =D
Got me! Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh man!
Well done. That is all.

OMG! I was just about ready to IM all my friends to tell them. I couldn’t see Andy in anything other than a Yankee uniform.
The first thing I thought was to check the date for april fool’s …but then I started reading the article and was taken in nicely…This hurt so pretty good…I guess we all have alot of affection for the big left-hander…I know I do…I wish him well…God bless him!!

Hey Laser – HA!
[...] is the April Fool’s post I wrote, which was scrapped when the Pettitte idea came up. As a bonus, here is the one I did last year on Cablevision dropping YES before the season, [...]

Very well done. I knew it was a AF joke, but think it is hilarious all the same.
Keep up the good work.
