The whole “work ethic” or “no work ethic” argument / theory for a pitcher’s struggles is hogwash for this reason alone:
David Wells pitched his perfect game with a hangover, or so he claims. I believe it (him.) That guy probably never did any kind of “up” (sit, chin, pull, push) in his life, and yet he had a very nice, long, lucrative career and outlasted many a pitcher who was in better shape / better built than him.
Colon since spring training. For a so-called old, fat, out of shape, washed up, hasbeen, scrapheap pickup pig, the guy is consistently dealing 90+ mph and might outlast Ivan Nova as a starting pitcher come May 1st. Speaking of Nova, one more start for him and if he stinks (to me 5 IP and 4 ER or worse cuz that’s not giving the Yankees length or quality), it’s Kevin Millwood time because Millwood’s opt-out clause kicks in May 1st.
These guys (Wells and Colon) were / are like the baseball versions of the beerbellied steelworker who has never stepped foot in a gym but could kick any gymrat’s or boxer’s ass in cuz he has streetfighting experience. I liken pitchers to streetfighters. Like every streetfighter has his own style/way of fighting, every pitcher has his own style/way of pitching.
