Michael Pineda is in the news for the first time in what seems like forever, as he was … drum roll, please … arrested for drunk driving.

I am not sure what aspect of this is most depressing. Is it the fact that this is the first news we’ve heard on Pineda since his surgery? The fact that this piles on to the purported make-up and maturity issues leaked from the Mariners? Or the fact that the only image Yankees fans have of Pineda involves his being out of shape and, now, drunk? In actuality, it’s all of the above.

Well that, and the fact that the Yankees and Major League Baseball are more than likely to do a great deal of nothing about this, as is their wont. I will climb off my soapbox for the time being, but for shame to all parties involved, in perpetuity.

Onto the lineups:

New York Yankees Chicago White Sox
Derek Jeter, SS Dewayne Wise, CF
Nick Swisher, DH Kevin Youkilis, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B Adam Dunn, DH
Mark Teixeira, 1B Paul Konerko, 1B
Curtis Granderson, CF Alex Rios, RF
Eric Chavez, 3B A.J. Pierzynski, C
Raul Ibanez, LF Dayan Viciedo, LF
Ichiro Suzuki, RF Alexei Ramirez, SS
Chris Stewart, C Gordon Beckham, 2B
Freddy Garcia, SP Gavin Floyd, SP

The first pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m., on the YES Network. Let’s go Yankees!

  1. Phil C says:

Freddy has been pitching well and the Yanks like hitting Floyd. If they aren’t too tired after last night’s game and the trip to Chi-town, this should be a good opportunity for the Yanks.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Few soft spots in the schedule from now on, unless the Red Sox totally collapse. There’s a series against the Twins late in September for some reason.

      • Phil C says:

Just checked Rays & O’s schedules. All are tough because so many are against each other. This is where I think the Yankees’ depth will make the difference. The Rays have the pitching, but the Yanks have more weapons. The O’s will have to rely more on their starting players during the run. I think the Yanks can win it, but they will have to earn it.

  2. Professor Longnose says:

Love those leadoff singles from Jeter.

  3. Professor Longnose says:

Swisher just missed a double by inches, but works the walk. Floyd already looks like he’s struggling.

  4. Phil C says:

Yeah, an RBI single by Tex.

  5. Professor Longnose says:

Granderson with guys on. I love it. Except when he Ks.

  6. Professor Longnose says:

Granderson walks. Bases loaded, and Floyd has thrown 26 pitches.

  7. Professor Longnose says:

On that play, Youkilis tagged third and then hung on to tag the runner coming in, even though he was already out.

  8. Professor Longnose says:

Ichiro with the bases loaded and two out. Can they break Floyd right now?

  9. Phil C says:

GaneDay can drive me crazy. It takes 15/20 seconds after they post, “in play, run(s)” before they tell what exactly happened.

  10. Phil C says:

Need a big 2 out hit from Itchy.

  11. Phil C says:

Golly gosh darn. Only 2 runs. I hate it.

  12. Professor Longnose says:

    Hate those leadoff singles.

  13. Professor Longnose says:

Granderson caught that deep in the warning track, touching the wall.

  14. AT Evans says:

    Hey Mike:

Excellent article- great analysis! The Yankees sure do benefit from his maturity and flexibility. I’ll take it!

Here’s hoping he signs another 1 yr deal!

    All the best,
    Aaron

  15. Professor Longnose says:

    Now Freddie’s struggling.

And as soon as I said that, he struck out the next guy. Maybe he can get out of this.

  16. Professor Longnose says:

Rios, 0 for his last 19 against righties.

  17. Phil C says:

Good to see Freddy got out of it without giving up a run.

  18. Professor Longnose says:

And Dunn helps out with bad baserunning.

  19. Phil C says:

Maybe Cano is out of his slump.

  20. Professor Longnose says:

Another bases-loaded chance to knock out Floyd. He’s up to 49 pitches.

  21. Phil C says:

Well, at least they got another run.

  22. Phil C says:

Looks like they’re running at will on Freddy/Stewart

  23. Professor Longnose says:

Freddie gets out of it. He’s not pitching much better than Floyd, but he’s not giving up the runs.

  24. Phil C says:

Frigging Rays up 5-1 in the 6th. The Yanks need to just outlast their run. They can not continue to hit & pitch like they have the past 1 1/2, 2 weeks.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, you’re right. They can’t, and I don’t think they’ll stay hot once they have to play AL East teams almost exclusively.

  25. Phil C says:

Wow! Just saw that Floyd was yanked. Ventura really wants this game.

  26. Professor Longnose says:

Robin Ventura has guts. Took his starter out in the third because he was pitching poorly. So un-Girardian.

    • Phil C says:

Gives the Yanks a chance to get deep into their pen, wear them down some for tomorrow. The first two games are the Yanks best chances to win. Sale will be tough.

  27. Phil C says:

Professor, did you see that Clemens has signed with the Independent League? The Astros sent a scout today, big deal, it’s less than an hour’s drive.

  28. Professor Longnose says:

Two on, no one out. Put the game away.

  29. Professor Longnose says:

Cano almost had that one out of here.

  30. Professor Longnose says:

This inning Santiago has thrown 23 pitches and the Yankees have swung at 2 of them.

  31. Phil C says:

I gather it ain’t been pretty, but no runs allowed by Freddy so far.

  32. Phil C says:

Ibanez at first. How do you know when Ibanez is ready to steal?

When the cab pulls up at 1st base.

  33. Phil C says:

    Ray’s game is a final, they’ve now won 12 of 14.

  34. Phil C says:

    What’s the delay about?

  35. Professor Longnose says:

    Crap.

  36. Professor Longnose says:

    I’d take Freddie out NOW.

    • Phil C says:

Agreed! I saw that AB on MLBN, he was nowhere near the targets Stewart was giving.

      • Professor Longnose says:

There’s no point. He’s almost at 100 pitches, and he can’t get the ball over. The only reason Girardi does this is to get him the win.

  37. Phil C says:

Finally! I know I complained about Lowe, but I’m surprised Girardi didn’t bring him in with his high GB rate because that’s what they need now.

  38. Phil C says:

Eppley did his job. Chavez’s throw was off and Cano failed to make the exchange.

  39. Professor Longnose says:

Ugh. He stayed with Freddie too long. And now he’s bringing in Chamberlain as though he’s pitching well, and he’s been terrible.

  40. Phil C says:

Damn!!! Girardi’s keeping Garcia in too long, poor fielding, and now Rapada’s pitching may cost the Yanks the game. Plus all the opportunities they had in the first 3 innings.

  41. Professor Longnose says:

    Fuck. Now I’m pissed.

  42. Phil C says:

I simply do not understand what is happening. It’s the 5th inning. There is someone in the pen who is a long man. Yet they are now using the 3rd reliever in the inning?

  43. Professor Longnose says:

Just about to give up, but the Captain obviously wants me to retain some hope.

  44. Phil C says:

I’m so upset about the bottom of the 5th that it’s hard tp get excite about Jeter’s HR.

  45. Phil C says:

NOTE TO TEX: This is US Cellular Field, what better place to send a Tex message?

  46. Professor Longnose says:

Tying run at third, less than 2 out. Get the &%(*#^R%Ting run in!

  47. Professor Longnose says:

Well, not exactly a screaming line drive, but a tying run is a tying run is a tying run.

  48. Michael says:

Way to go Tex! Feel like the Yankees dont do as well in the later innings this year as they used to

  49. Michael says:

My question is, can Don Cooper turn water into wine?

  50. Phil C says:

Unless Fibber hits a 3-run HR there is no way Joba should come out for the 6th inning.

  51. Phil C says:

7 walks, 10 hits and only 6 runs, despite going 4 for 11 RISP. Too many lost opportunities.

  52. Michael says:

Okay honestly who didn’t see that coming? Last thing to return from TJS is command. Of course Joba is going to get hammered (no pun intended given the news today and Jobas history). Low leverage situations only please and thank you

    • Phil C says:

That’s what Girardi said was how he was going to use him after his last disaster. And here he does it again. I was against them getting Lowe, but I can’t believe he’s sitting and Joba’s pitching.

  53. Professor Longnose says:

Is Giradi DAFT? He’s got a WHIP of 3. What the %^&* is he doing out there?

  54. Phil C says:

Joba’s going to pitch to Dunn and Konerko and I don’t have a drop of alcohol in the house?

  55. Phil C says:

Just saw Cano’s play to end the inning (on MLBN)…..NICE!! But so typical!

  56. Professor Longnose says:

Good night, all. I’m going to see a Hudson Valley Renegades game tomorrow, so won’t be around.
