The Yankees have won eight consecutive games coming into today’s matinee against the Nationals. All good things must come to an end but there is no reason why the team can’t make it nine straight wins. Incredible starting pitching has fueled the Yankee surge. Ironically, CC Sabathia has probably been the team’s worst starter during this stretch. Ivan Nova will toe the rubber for the Yankees today. He was brilliant in his last start, allowing no runs and just six base runners in seven innings. Hopefully he stays hot. The Nationals will counter with familiar foe Edwin Jackson. Jackson has pitched strong this year, posting a 1.01 WHIP and an ERA of 3.02. That’s all fine and good, but he’s still Edwin Jackson and the Yankees know him well. Enjoy.

    Welcome back TYA!!

Looks like the Yanks knocked Lidge right off the Nats roster.

  2. Michael says:

Haha thats rough. You get beat up in your outing against the Yankees then lose your job. Wonder if Jackson is auditioning for a job in pinstripes? Yankees apparently almost had him in a trade about a week or two ago

  3. Michael says:

Apparently a package of Eduardo Nunez, Nik Turley, and Ben Gamel or Kelvin DeLeon for a Nats starting pitcher. I can’t imagine it was either Strasburg, Gio, or Zimmerman but the deal obviously feel through

  4. Phil C says:

Nice job by Cano tagging on the fly ball.

  5. Phil C says:

They hit the ball well, but only one run. Nova needs to shut them down.

  6. smurfy says:

Who’s that fast gun at second? It’s Robbie (Whew) Cano!

  7. Phil C says:

Nice shut down inning….and only 8 pitches. The ‘pen needs Nova to go deep today.

    • Michael says:

Nova does a very good job of going deep into games. I don’t remember the last time he has gone less than 6 innings even when he doesn’t have his best stuff.

  8. Michael says:

Didn’t really have much doubt in my mind Cano was going to get him. Hes got a howitzer for an arm

  9. Phil C says:

What’s over the York on the front of the Yankees uniforms today?

  10. Michael says:

You really can’t be leaving pitches there Nova. Im concerned about that, if this is more than just some second year bad luck or if this is who he is.

  11. Phil C says:

I’m surprised the Nats haven’t been shifting on Tex.

  12. smurfy says:

Ibanez nearly got that one, the liner foul.

    Goodly battle, to be continued.

  13. Michael says:

Lets get some more grounders please…

  14. smurfy says:

Harper is vulnerable to the slider, but he handles the curve.

  15. Phil C says:

I don’t think Stewart’s as good behind the plate as advertised. Not just calling the game, but 5 pb’s so far, ugh!

    • Michael says:

I really don’t see what Stewart brings to the table. And as far as being CC’s personal catcher…the rest of the staff is doing amazing. CC is not. Every single pitcher who has thrown to Martin has done well, and CC with his personal catcher is sub par. Stewart doesn’t hit soo I would honestly welcome DFA and Cervelli call up. I miss Cervelli’s wacky facial expressions and as a backup hes fine. Hes got skills

      • Phil C says:

I agree completely. Love Frankie’s enthusiasm.

      • smurfy says:

I agree about cervelli, but I would hold the phone on Stewart. He’s come thru hitting, rather like Cervelli, in the clutch and quite a surprise. I think he’s a good receiver and caller, and time will tell.

        • Phil C says:

The real problem right now is That Cervelli is the only other ML ready catcher in the Yankee organization.

  16. Phil C says:

LMAO at Nova’s bunting stance!! His ass was halfway to the dugout!!

  17. smurfy says:

Jackson’s pitching well, staying awway from the hitters. Lots of late movement, tricky.

  18. Michael says:

Good thing were not in Yankee stadium. Nova wouldve given up 3 homers today

    • smurfy says:

LaRoche’s was nearly a dupe, and there was another off the scoreboard. I hate thaty scoreboard. Better to get true bounces off a fence.

  19. Phil C says:

    4-6-3 inning over. NICE!

  20. smurfy says:

    Curtis, Curtis, he’s our man!

  21. Phil C says:

Jackson was living dangerously with Grandy, both pitches were up.

  22. smurfy says:

Arod is spoiling for it. Hit that one well.

  23. smurfy says:

Texy just missed a beauty. Bet he wishes he hadn’t confused himself, going to left sometimes.

  24. Phil C says:

Let’s see if Nova can shut them down now.

  25. smurfy says:

Bunt against me, will you? Duck!

  26. Phil C says:

Nice job by Nova, but why in God’s name did they throw another curve ball to Harper?

  27. Phil C says:

I expect some Yankee runs this inning.

    Just saying……

  28. smurfy says:

    Nice swinging bunt, Stewie!

  29. Phil C says:

I bet if Garner was on third it would have been a squeeze bunt.

    • Michael says:

I do really miss Gardner. Wish the Yankees had more speed guys like him

      • smurfy says:

We’ve got Grandy, a registered offender, but Joe doesn’t seem to want to play the squeeze game much. I remember some double steals last year, tho.

        • Phil C says:

Last year the Yanks were among the league leaders in steals. Now without Gardner & Nunez they’re missing the speed aspect of the game.

  30. Phil C says:

Jones should have gone on the fly ball to Harper. I think coaches should be more aggressive because it takes an almost perfect throw and even good arms like Harper can’t do it most of the time.

  31. Professor Longnose says:

Hey, everyone. Was listening on the radio while driving. Just got to the computer. How goes?

  32. Michael says:

Nova is being really economical. He might go the entire way…if this wasn’t an NL game

  33. Phil C says:

Wow! A 4 pitch inning. I love over aggressive hitters. (On the other team that is.)

  34. smurfy says:

Nobody has remarked on Morse’s curious habit of bringing his face close to his bat, and kissing the ball in his imagination, just before he bats.

  35. Michael says:

Cmonnn homers!! I want more of them!

  36. Michael says:

    Keep looking Harper

  37. Phil C says:

    Gorzelanny was today’s Lidge.

  38. Professor Longnose says:

Poor Brad Lidge. He’s been trying to hang on for a while.

    • smurfy says:

yeah, he was really happy a couple years back. But I think he gets to keep a free agent’s million or two, to console him.

      • Phil C says:

Someone will pick him up. I hope it’s the Os or the Rays.

      • Professor Longnose says:

Oh, I’d signup for his career in a second.

But he had one of those seasons that’s a byproduct of the free agent era: a year when he stunk, but his team kept sending him out there. That must have been brutal in a way that even stinking and getting sent home doesn’t.

  39. smurfy says:

Better than RISP: an embarrassed opponent!

  40. Michael says:

    Andrew Jones is always smiling

  41. Phil C says:

One more shut down inning by Nova.

    • Michael says:

I would let Nova start the 8th if he can shut them down and make it through this inning under 95 pitches

  42. smurfy says:

Man, Lombardazzi scared me with that foul liner. What a shot. He has hit well this weekend.

  43. Phil C says:

Nova’s struggling with his command. Settle down…..could use a dp now.

  44. Michael says:

Let Nova throw in the 8th or no?

  45. smurfy says:

Perfect! Nova made it thru seven, and he leads off this inning.

Nice going, Ivan! (that’s my vote, Michael)

  46. Phil C says:

Not pretty, but no runs. Will they let Nova bat?

  47. Michael says:

Yes! Glad to see them let him hit and more so, let him pitch in the 8th

  48. smurfy says:

Wow, Ivan worked him to 3-0.

Yeah, Michael, he’s got a 3 run lead, but he might be sloppy, but uh, Joe knows.

  49. Professor Longnose says:

    Let’s hear it for Ivan!

  50. Phil C says:

    I-Van, I-Van

  51. Phil C says:

I think that after his early struggles, Super Nova is back.

    • smurfy says:

he’s doing real good, mixing up. But fb command needs tightening, somethings a little off there: the fb that leaked into the middle; not many grounders. Did not see his slider after the first, I think.

  52. smurfy says:

    A double double day!

Fine as wine outside; but the US Open is attractive, too.

  53. Michael says:

Cano, Nova, and Tex all having pretty good days today. Maybe one more homer Jones? Please?

  54. Michael says:

Aaaaaaaand now I can go to work lol

  55. Phil C says:

    sweep, sweep, sweep

  56. Phil C says:

Back to The Bronx & the Braves. CC don’t let us down. Chat y’all tomorrow!

  57. smurfy says:

See you later, guys in a hurry. Al Leiter was pointing out something interesting: Soriano’s delivery: he looks down, comes set – and takes the sign – and continues to rock back, and…

What if he doesn’t like the sign? Isn’t he going to balk if he stops?
