Yanks win on a once-in-a-decade rally at Fenway

Just in case you think that headline is hyperbole, its not. The Yanks were down to their hated rivals from Beantown 9-0 after the 5th inning, and came back to post a 15-6 victory by the time the dust settled. That’s the first time since 5/16/06 against the Texas Rangers that the Yanks have come back to win a game from a deficit that big, and just the 4th time in franchise history. We all know that no lead is safe in Fenway, but today’s events were extreme to say the least. I’m not even sure what we witnessed was baseball, at least not the MLB version of it. I don’t think I could get a full recap in at under 1000 words, so to save my fingers and your eyeballs I’ll just unload my Twitter account on you guys bullet point style:

  • Freddy Garcia was awful once again, going 1.1 innings and giving 5R on 7H. He literally had nothing, and Boston hitters were just teeing off on him, especially his slider. Boston hitters were 5-9 off him, and even the outs were loud. It was a Kei Igawa-esque performance by Sweaty Freddy. With the off days coming up there was much speculation in the press box that they’ll skip him his next turn, possibly two turns, at which point Andy could be ready. But none of that has been confirmed by the Yanks as of yet. For the year, Freddy has allowed 14R 20H (11 EBH) in just 12 IP and has a 9.75 ERA.
  • Freddy Garcia has pitched 1.2 innings or less 6 times in his career, 3 of them since joining the Yanks last year. All 3 were facing the Red Sox.
  • Felix Dubront was rolling through the Yankee lineup, allowing just 1R with 7K through 6IP, the run coming on a Mark Teixeira solo shot. He reached his pitch count (99 pitches) so manager Bobby Valentine pulled him after the 6th. That’s when all hell broke loose.
  • Boston lead 9-0 after 5 innings, and the Yanks scored 14 unanswered runs. They not only tied it up, they actually won it going away. Vincente Padilla started the 6th, loaded the bases and allowed a grand slam to Nick Swisher. Matt Albers relieved Padilla and allowed a 3 run HR to Tex. Frankin Morales managed to escape the 7th without further damage. Bobby V then calls on his closer Alfredo Aceves to get 6 outs, and he recorded zero.
  • Red Sox bullpen line 3IP 12H 14R 13 ER 5BB 2K. Red Sox relievers allowed 14 Runs in today’s game alone, Yankee relievers have allowed 13R all season.
  • Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira did most of the damage, combining for 12 RBI on the game. Tex hit HRs from both sides of the plate for the 13th time in his career, extending his MLB record. The one in the 7th was an opposite field shot batting lefty.
  • Nick Swisher’s 20 RBI lead not only the Yanks, but the entire AL. He didn’t reach 20 RBIs last year until May 29th.
  • The Yanks have 19 HRs in their last 7 games.
  • After the game, Bobby Valentine had a closed door meeting with GM Ben Cherington and 0wner John Henry, who was in attendance at the game. Bobby V was quoted after the meeting saying “I think we’ve hit bottom”.

    I was there. I still can’t believe it happened. And I’m particularly glad that I didn’t leave early.

      Even when a game appears to be over, I always hang around. If it gets too ugly I may turn it off for an inning or two, but I always come back. I’ve seen this happen a few times, most memorably against a vintage Pedro Martinez in a game the Yanks eventually lost. Sometimes outs are very hard to come by, and things spin out of control. You just never know.

    Man Swisher is SOOOOOO unclutch, I hope we replace him with Chris Dickerson or anyone who can drive in key runs.
