For this afternoon’s pitching match up, you couldn’t have a more stark contrast in styles in the opposing pitchers. Max Scherzer is one of the great young arms in baseball who features a mid-90s fastball and a devastating change up, one that when its working makes facing him almost unfair. Freddy Garcia is 34 years old, has the right shoulder of a someone twice his age, and sits in the mid-80s with his ‘heater’. And you know what? They pitched to a virtually identical results for the season, with Scherzer at 4.14 FIP and Freddy at 4.12 FIP. Everyone gets seduced by the guys with the big fastballs, and all that steady Freddy Garcia does is get people out. Scherzer has been prone to the long ball and much better at home than on the road, as Chad Jennings of LoHud pointed out this morning. Max was supposed to pitch Game 3 at Comerica, but the Friday rain out forced a change of plans. As I posted yesterday, when we look back at this series that Friday rainstorm may very well have been the turning point.

In other news, my question from this morning CC will be going in Game 3 and Burnett Game 4. Personally, I think that’s a mistake if the Yanks win today. I like creating the Game 4 mismatch instead of two games where the Tigers will be slight favorites. Here’s your lineup, courtesy of Yankee PR:

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Robinson Cano 2B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C
Brett Gardner LF

GO YANKS!!!!!!

  1. Professor Longnose says:

Let’s hope Freddie’s on his game and Scherzer isn’t.

  2. smurfy says:

Hey, Prof. Schertzer seems to be suffering from “flat” sliders, his flaw, by Mitch Williams and John Smoltz.

  3. smurfy says:

and Freddie looks good, except against his hometown brother, Ordonez, and that scuzzy Cabrera fella: what a lucky homer1 Did he mean to chip it out there, or what?

  4. smurfy says:

Our boys will find some cracks, if Freddie can hold them off. Good he just got past Cabrera. Hunh? Thought he made the last out – oh, musta been Delmon.

  5. smurfy says:

Scherzer’s 2 seamer has been working it, and he got Cano with a lively 4 seamer.

Come on, Tex. Catch one! Daqmn, he can spot his 2 seam on 3-2.

  6. Professor Longnose says:

    Dammit, Swisher, break out!

  7. Professor Longnose says:

    Gardner better work him.

  8. smurfy says:

Brett made a good stroke there, but right at Betamit.

  9. smurfy says:

Did you see the game last night, or a replay, surely, of the play at the plate? Avila gave Martin some professional courtesy there, he coulda wiped him out like a rag doll, being all stretched out to catch the ball.

Be glad to return the favor, rather than break his bones. I’m a peacenik on home-plate collisions.

  10. smurfy says:

Shame neither Freddie nor Robbie could reach that one.

  11. smurfy says:

Great work by Boone Logan! Four runs, it’s only 4 frigging runs, only.

  12. Professor Longnose says:

They’re running out of time. When this team doesn’t hit, it doesn’t hit at all.

And it doesn’t hit in the 7th, 8th,and 9th innings even when it does hit.

  13. smurfy says:

God bless Yankee fans with a rally, nay, a cavalcade of runs.

Yankees, do your duty! Did you see the past Honorable Rudy Guilani, just waiting, forlorn, tho respectful?

  14. Professor Longnose says:

Come on, at least get the tying run to the plate, to make it interesting.

  15. Professor Longnose says:

Posada! I love it when he does well.

    Now pinch run for him.

  16. smurfy says:

oh, jim Leland, the wet blanket. Just when the boys were starting to get along with Mr. Sherzer.

May this move be as much of a no brainer as the last one.

  17. Steve S. says:

Joakim Benoit gets batters out purely on the ugliness of his beard.

  18. smurfy says:

Where is the asshole who has to get permission to stop the friggin game?

    • smurfy says:

guess they need to get scuba equipment to better see the ball.

Isolated shower, 20 minutes, so TBS can’t wait?

  19. Reg says:

The home Plate umpire blows…so does our line up thus far

  20. smurfy says:

gee, wouldn’t it have been nice if Curtis came up last inning?

  21. Professor Longnose says:

    Baserunners! Get some baserunners!

  22. Professor Longnose says:

Now, Swish? NOW?? What was the matter with when there were guys on base?

  23. Professor Longnose says:

Holy shit! A TRIPLE for Posada? Go, man, go!!!

  24. Professor Longnose says:

One more guy on and the tying run comes up. Come on, guys, come on.

  25. smurfy says:

Wow, Jorge! Did you see him halt, rounding second? That was me mentally tackling him.

  26. Professor Longnose says:

    Damn.

  27. Professor Longnose says:

Silly that they pinch hit Chavez for a lefty before, and now didn’t have him to hit against a righty.

  28. Professor Longnose says:

I want Granderson and Cano up with only one out. Come on, Jeter.

  29. smurfy says:

    do or die!

    or slip and fall!

    the heavens give, after taking!

  30. smurfy says:

alright stop the friggin game for 10 minutes! Assholes!

  31. Professor Longnose says:

    Forget the die! Just do!

  32. Professor Longnose says:

    Die
