TYA Game Thread, Tuesday June 28, 2011
It’s mania here in Yankee land with the former Kansas City Royals Ace back in the Bronx for the first time as a Milwaukee Brewer. Moshe revisits the trade for Greinke that wasn’t, while Larry drew attention to Greinke’s bizarre ERA-FIP split of 4.77 to 2.30 in his series preview. Larry highlighted that Greinke has an unbelievably high BABIP of .348 and is getting crushed to the tune of .339/.373/.661 with runners in scoring position. As Lar noted, this could be awful luck, or it could mean that when Greinke isn’t locating his pitches he’s leaving them out over the plate. We’ll see.
Here’s the lineup:
– LF
– CF
– 1B
– 3B
– 2B
– RF
– DH
– C
Eduardo Nunez – SS
Freddy Garcia – P
Game starts at 7pm, on YES. Enjoy.

Enough with the Jeter’s got an edge commercial, it’s so 2007/08 when it came out.
“Jeter? You KNOW he’s got an edge!” Ugh.
Yeah, he has an edge. He’s batting .260 with a .324 OBP.
Someone stop running this commercial please, it’s depressing.

ZG should get to line up and shoot most of his team.

Wow, Martin blows now. Total #9 hitter.
Montero is that lousy a catcher he can’t be called up to take over from Martin or at least reduce Martin’s playing time?

Yeah it’s not like he broke his big toe and has been dealing with major back issues or anything, while also playing the most physically demaning position in baseball. He’s also 30 times the defensive catcher Montero will ever be.

Um, then he shouldn’t be playing most games if at all since he’s hurting the team with his bat, should he? No he shouldn’t. And he’s not 30X the catcher Montero is, but keep hating Montero. I think Montero is an overvalued nothing, but I won’t go so far as to say he’s 30X worse than Martin, the new weak link of the offense after Jeter.
Btw I doubt Martin himself would make excuses for him sucking with the bat, so don’t make excuses for him ok?
Cervelli should be playing everyday over him cuz you know, Cervelli doesn’t have a broken toe and major back issues, hasn’t played the most physically demanding position every day, is a few years younger than Martin, and might possibly hit better than Martin has in recent times. But Girardi wants to further drive Martin into the ground, so I’ll have to grin and bear it.
Btw who’s the everyday catcher if Martin had a season-ending injury tonight? Cervelli? Molina? Posada? If Posada who’s the DH? I’ll take Montero over all three at C for his bat. If the dude truly sucks as a catcher, it won’t take more than a few games to find out.

And the Brewers are thinking, Boy we’re glad we got out of this league.

Swishalicious!!!! 7-0 Yankees. Grienke’s buggin!
10 HR and 41 RBI for Swisher now, so he’s on pace for at least 20 HR and 82 RBI. Not bad.
I won’t get too excited as sometimes games like this are too good to be true.

It’s kind of sad seeing Greinke so bad after that incredible ’09 season. But, well, I’m not really complaining. AND the Red Sox are losing, and Lee has yet to allow a hit.
[Reply]
His peripherals were great coming into the game, although his ERA was high. In this game his defense let him down, but he wasn’t great even considering that.
[Reply]
Wow, first start of Greinke’s career in which he didn’t strike anyone out.

Final line on Tex this season? .241/.356/.575 and 50 homers?

Base hit! JoPo came into the game with an OPS+ of 99. He’s this close to achieving mediocrity!

I agree with Jacob Ruppert:
“During the 1920s New York Yankee owner Jacob Ruppert once described his perfect afternoon at Yankee Stadium. ‘It’s when the Yankees score eight runs in the first inning,’ Ruppert said, ‘and then slowly pull away.’” – Peter Golenbock in Dynasty: The New York Yankees (1975)

Cliff Lee pitched a complete-game 2-hit shutout against the Red Sox.
