The big news tonight is that the Yankees have placed on the 15 day DL. Eduardo Nunez will take over as the starting shortstop, and has been called up from Scranton. and the YES crew are talking about this as though its a big blow to the Bombers. I for one will be disappointed that we’ll have to wait a little longer to see a Yankee finally collect 3,000 hits, but Derek is a 77 OPS+ hitter right now, while Nunez is a 60 OPS+ hitter. Neither one is making or breaking this offense.

It’s raining right now in the Bronx and the game is expected to be delayed. It will be on MY9 whenever it does finally start.

Here’s the lineup:

– LF
– CF
– DH
– 3B
– 2B
– 1B
– RF
Eduardo Nunez – SS
– C

pitches for the Yankees. The Rangers will counter with , who’s good, but the Yankees have at least seen him before. Enjoy.

  1. The tarp is off the field and MY9 just aired the National Anthem. Big stoppa is taking the mound. Looks like this game is about to get under way.

  2. Let’s hope the Yanks can touch Ogando up again. They got him for five last time.

The flip play, the flip play, the flip play.

As memorable as the diving into the stands play was, it was also kinda stupid. He traded an out(albeit a big one) for missing the rest of the game and the next few days. I’d rather he didn’t make that play.

    Professor Longnose Reply:

You don’t get to know beforehand which attempts will end up with an injury. If Jeter doesn’t try to make that play, he would likely have also had to not try to make a bunch of others, too.

    That’s bold of them.

Well, that was a quick outing. Tex layed down the HAMMER. That hit was awesome. And not a Home Run to boot. I thought the Yankees could only score on the long ball?

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

Bold is the nicest word I could use to describe this group. As a whole they make every game against the Rangers unenjoyable.

Ogando really got himself into trouble with all the balls. I don’t care how good your fastball is, if that’s all you have you will be in trouble against this team.

I thought Alex had that one.

    [Reply]

    Steve S. Reply:

Ogando is too predictable for a good hitting team like the Yanks. As good as his fastball is, the Yanks have too many hitters that can handle it, and he doesn’t have good location with his breaking balls. They just sit fastball.

    T.O. Chris Reply:

This is actually the worst I have seen his control, I’ve watched a few games of his this year and this was by far the worst. He experimented with a few different breaking balls, including a split in spring training, but nothing has been great. The biggest reason he was in the pen last year is that exact reason.

Apparently he has 4 IP in the major league with Texas in 2008, with 4 H, no BB’s, and 1 K, while posting a 2.25 ERA and a 2.63 FIP. He’s been in the minor leagues with the Astros, Rangers and Phillies since 2007. He will start for us on Thursday.

Mitch Moreland had a Grand Slam that didn’t count this year. He had the final hit off of Gio Gonzalez, that took Gio out after 2+ innings, and the game was rained out in the 3rd. You have to be pissed when you lose 1 HR, and 4 RBI because of rain.

Meh, I’d rather get a look at Phelps. I like Noesi out of the bullpen, but Phelps has a full compliment of pitches.

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

I agree. I wonder if Brian doesn’t feel like Phelps would react well, or if he would just rather give this guy a chance before calling up any of the kids. Fangraphs says in 08 he averaged 88 MPH in those 4 innings, so he isn’t exactly a world beater with velocity.

    [Reply]

    Mike Jaggers-Radolf Reply:

The Yankees seem always to jump on the opportunity to throw someone out there who has been in the big leagues before, even if it doesn’t make any sense.

    T.O. Chris Reply:

Maybe Cashman thinks this is the year to try out of a project. I guess he got lucky with Colon and Garcia, why not try it again. Although I’m really not sure 4 innings counts anywhere near as much as Colon and Garcia.

  16. T.O. Chris says:

Great stroke by Alex on that one.

Rangers are convinced Teixeira faked the HBP, any replays confirm this?

    [Reply]

    Mike Jaggers-Radolf Reply:

Unclear. They’re not showing it. They’re showing Tex score and talking about why he holds his batting gloves when he runs.

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

The one replay they showed on FSRangers looked kind of like he did, but it was hard to tell if it clipped the back half of the shoe or not. They said he looked fine going around the bases, so that was their proof.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

I guess that’ why Torrealba was hopping on one foot after Tex did it. I was gathering wool, Gardner was sliding into second, and both these guys were hopping around. I thought, “shit! what the hell is going on.”

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

I don’t see why Teixeira would take himself out of an opportunity to bat with a man in scoring position, especially after he drove in a run in his last at bat. He also yelled out an expletive at the exact same time the ball landed. If he faked it, he is really good with timing.

What is this bullshit about “Hughes is a starter” from Girardi?

The only way I’d put Hughes back in the rotation is if Colon doesn’t come back before Hughes or Nova sucks again. Either scenario is possible, but if Colon returns before Hughes and Nova keeps pitching like he has the past two starts, Hughes can make starts in AAA or go back to the Yankees’ bullpen until Colon or Nova suck. You don’t fix what ain’t broke, and no 0-3, 10+ ERA dude should be given his job back automatically.

If Hughes comes back before Colon and Nova is still pitching well, Hughes to the pen when Colon returns, period, end of story, case closed. This isn’t spring training or when no one knew what Colon would give the Yankees when Hughes was dl’d.

Someone tell that ill-read blowhard Michael Kay that Hughes had an ERA around 5 (or was it just over 5?) after a 6-1 start last season and that Hughes won 18 games primarily from having the best run support in the league. He had one of the worst 18-win seasons a starter could have.

  18. T.O. Chris says:

Sabathia looked real sharp to start the first 3 innings, but the Rangers offense has gotten to him in the 2 innings since then. Last time out he looked almost unhittable for most of the game, and then the Red Sox clobbered him. Good thing we have a 9 spot on the board.

Did you see the clip of a switch hitter up against Venditte? Guy keeps switching back and forth, and Pat keeps switching his pitching hand. When Venditte strikes him out with a curve, he hammers his bat down, and stumps off, screaming “it’s not fair!”

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

Yeah, they passed a rule because of that. He’s a fun story but I highly doubt he ever makes it to the big leagues to put that rule into practice though.

  20. T.O. Chris says:

Man, some Yankee fan just think we can trade for anyone. I just got done reading an article insisting Clayton Kershaw will be available, that simply makes no sense. They also suggested offering Montero and Banuelos for Gio Gonzalez and Brian Fuentes, saying it’s more likely they would trade Gio because Anderson is hurt. I certainly wouldn’t trade both for him, I think Banuelos has at least as much upside as Gonzalez does. I also fail to see how losing one of your best, young, affordable pitchers makes you more likely to trade one of the others.

    smurfy Reply:

Goofy, and Kershaw is the last Dodger to go. Probably too much fantasy b’ball.

I pointed out Kershaw to my daughter, trying to interest her in baseball, and she said,”Hmm, now That’s interesting.” They won’t let him out of Hollywood.

    T.O. Chris Reply:

It’s the same with all “The Mariners aren’t going to win a World Series in the next 3 years so they have to trade Felix” people. I’m just hoping we don’t end up with Brett Myers or Wandy Rodriguez.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

I was playing around with the “get Felix” movement. But I’d never heard of Pineda, or thought they would hit enough to beat .500. They’ve got a glimmer now, and Seattle must be starving. So, no dice.

I hope Cashman doesn’t deal for second raters. Seems like a great year to dig for diamonds among prospects. If we can’t land an excellent pitcher without giving away the store, better to wait for it.

    Get Dustin Moseley back.

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

You can almost never land an excellent pitcher without giving up a lot of the farm. No one is going to trade us any top end rotational starter for less than a package built around Banuelos or Montero, and many will require both. Liriano is an interesting name, and the best available target who shouldn’t cost either of those 2. I’m also high on Edwin Jackson, he shouldn’t cost much, and could be brought back next year. The Yankees will trade for someone, they won’t stand pat, and they won’t go with prospects the rest of the way. I just hope they avoid Myers and Wandy because I don’t see either doing well in the AL East.

Trading for Moseley would be a waste. He isn’t going to be much better than an in house option anyway, and his numbers are clearly being helped by Petco park. Plus he hurt his non throwing shoulder last start swinging the bat.

If the White Sox wanted to part with John Danks I’d be open to trading anyone not named Sanchez, Montero, or Banuelos, but I don’t see any incentive on their part for just Betances and some others.

The big problem is none of the top end starters are going to be available, at any price. So we’re going to have to sift through the red flags, and middle to back end guys.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

I say add Betances to your no-go list, keep Brackman on the farm till he gets control. Develop Nova, Noesi, try out Phelps, Warren. With good young ones tied up, gotta develop our own.

    [Reply]

    T.O. Chris Reply:

Betances has a lot of red flags for me, he could be an ace, or he could bust out completely. If I got a chance to trade Betances in a package and bring back a top end starter, I do it in a heart beat. His control is always going to be a huge concern, and he may very well end up in the bullpen by the time it’s all said and done.

Just because we have prospects we can’t fall so in love we aren’t willing to move them. Yes some should be treasured, but I don’t look at Betances as being in the same category as Montero or Banuelos. There is no such thing as an untouchable prospect.

I no longer see Brackman as a starting pitcher, his control is never going to come around well enough to go through lineups 3-4 times. Noesi is going to be a bullpen peice, and I think the Yankees realize this as well. The reason they aren’t going to let him start Thursday is they want to see what they can get out of him in an Aceves like role, be anything from long relief to one important inning.

I’m going to set Granderson’s HR over/under at 40 at this point, and I think I’m taking the over. I still don’t believe he will hit 50, but he is certainly on pace to do just that.

    [Reply]

    smurfy Reply:

They’ve had time to find a hole. If he doesn’t get hurt, I could see him keeping it up. His batting pos is perfect, with Tex and Arod and Cano behind him. His split against lefties is remarkable, and consistent.

Gardner’s finally doing a good job of getting on first and taking off. For the longest time it looked like he always wanted to have the best lead, the best jump, and the best count to steal the bag. With his speed he doesn’t need all of that, he can simply out run the baseball.

Maybe it’s just me but I can’t bring myself to even care a little about Jeter getting 3000. He’s already a guaranteed first ballot hall of famer, and he’s having an awful year. Watching him slowly hit singles until he gets this mark just isn’t getting me excited.

I don’t much either, don’t like the milestone hype, but the Citi event sounds kinda juicy, in an evil way.

So who’s the player of the game? Hard to choose. Tex, Alex, Grandy, Gardy, Swish, Jorge,Robbie, CC? Better give to Nunez: kept that wonderful rally going!
