Yankees pick up extra-innings victory, despite Rivera blown save

With the Yankees leading 3-2 in the eighth inning, came on to set things up for Rivera. Robertson struggled in the inning, allowing two hits. In response, brought Mo in for a rare four out save. Rivera got out of the eighth without a problem, but allowed things to get away from him in the ninth. doubled in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, scoring . The Orioles would have walked off on the hit, except was thrown out at home in a close play.
After a rain delay in the top of the 11th, the Yankees plated three more runs to put the game out of reach for Baltimore. Not even could mess this one up, as the lefty picked up the win.
was the hero on the offensive side of the ledger. Granderson slugged his seventh home run of the season, and knocked in three runs on a 3-5 day. After a slow start, Granderson is now hitting .292/.343/.708. For those who are curious, is hitting .193/.264/.289.
also had a big game, going 4-6, including his second double of the season. That was the good news for the Captain. The bad news is that two of his hits were infield singles, and the double was just his second extra-base hit of the season. Derek is currently slugging .284.
The Yankees are back at home tomorrow night to face the Chicago White Sox in a 7pm game. toes the rubber for the Bombers. is on the stump for Chicago.

Sorry to quibble, but it’s not really the case that Rivera got out of the eighth without a problem. Brett Gardner’s terrific catch saved Rivera from giving up a double that would have driven in at least one run, probably 2 runs. Then there was the play at the plate that saved Rivera in the 9th. One must conclude that Rivera was not at all effective today.

Thanks for the comments David. They’re appreciated.
In a way, you’ve caught us with one of the difficulties of recapping every game for the blog. I was not in a position to write the recap immediately after the game, which is how we do it most of the time. My experience is that my analysis of events is not as strong when there is such a delay.
