In the American League, doubleheaders are usually when managers earn their money. Games surrounding a series with a doubleheader are always played a little differently, conservatively with the bullpen, and aggressive with the bats. We saw this last night when the struggling Kuroda pitched into the 6th inning, all in an attempt to conserve some of their arms for both of today’s games.

You’ll see some weaker lineups, some questionable pitching moves, and hopefully two wins. Joe Girardi managed to a 7-3 record in doubleheaders last year, and two wins today would give the Yankees a huge advantage over the struggling Red Sox. Here is todays’s lineup courtesy of Chad Jennings.

To paraphrase the great Ernie Banks, “Let’s chat two today.”

  2. Phil C says:

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! I have to watch the game on MLBN and they’re used the NESN feed. Please let me know if I appear to become homicidal.

  3. Michael Eder says:

    Ridiculous Red Sox lineup.

  4. Phil C says:

Cano is the one guy they can least afford to lose.

  5. Michael Eder says:

Had a good feeling about Swisher there. Holding my breath on Cano.

  6. Phil C says:

Nice way for Swish to break out of his Martin.

  7. Michael Eder says:

Damn, Is that enough for Freddy? I’d love to see this continue, and the Yankees dismantle the Red Sox bullpen in game 1.

  8. Phil C says:

This game better not be a replay of last night’s.

  9. Phil C says:

Yank’s are slipping, only 4 runs in the 1st. Now Garcia needs a shutdown inning.

  10. Michael says:

Hey hey just tuning in. Im getting a weird feeling of deja vu here…

  11. Phil C says:

Freddy did his job in that inning.

  12. Phil C says:

Starting with yesterday’s game, 48 of the Yanks final 81 games are against AL East.

  13. Phil C says:

I can’t believe it…..2 guys picked off in one inning.

  14. smurfy says:

Nothing like a tag on the nose to make Swish’s pickoff experience really memorable. He owes them another Monsta shot.

  15. Professor Longnose says:

That was some lousy baserunning, but I get the feeling it won’t matter.

    • smurfy says:

newfound confidence in a crafty ol’ pitcher?

      • Professor Longnose says:

That could happen, or the Yankees could pound the Sox bullpen. So they have possibilities.

Or Morales could give up some more homers.

  16. Phil C says:

Nice slow curves from Freddy…69 & 70 mph.

  17. smurfy says:

Freddy has been doing it to them. Last time out, I felt he was hit hard, and was lucky, but so far, he’s been slippery as can be.

  18. Professor Longnose says:

    Jimmie Foxx comes to mind.

  19. smurfy says:

Whoo! Way to chip in, Andruw.

  20. Phil C says:

Someone should show Morales the memo that said not to throw Jones a fastball down the middle. OMG!! Nix too.

  21. smurfy says:

Nixy trick! You may be right on the beam, Prof.

  22. Phil C says:

    Nice. Here comes the pen.

  23. smurfy says:

Oouch. Three in a row, plus a liner to short.

  24. Professor Longnose says:

A run’s no problem, but let’s put a cork in this rally quickly.

  25. Professor Longnose says:

    Nice cork, Freddie!

  26. smurfy says:

    Amazing, how Kalish cooperated there.

  27. Phil C says:

Good, Garcia turned the smoke machine back on. It was out for 3 batters.

  28. smurfy says:

That’s striking, that there’s no other day game. Guess Sat night baseball is popular.

    • Professor Longnose says:

It is with me, because generally I miss the Saturday afternoon games doing the family business, shopping, chauffeuring, etc.

  29. smurfy says:

that should be a ground rule triple.

  30. Phil C says:

I think I heard a sonic boom on that liner by Cano. I hope that means his finger is OK.

  31. Professor Longnose says:

    Andruw wanted that third homer.

  32. Michael says:

Im starting to come around on Nix. If he shows he can actually play shortstop well defensively the Yankees may not even need a true bench infielder. Hes pretty versatile.

  33. Michael says:

    Nix looked pretty good there

  34. smurfy says:

Professor, when you planning to use the Batter’s Eye tix?

    • Professor Longnose says:

Funny you should ask. I just traded them in today for tickets to September 1. Not batter’s eye, though. They only give crummy seats.

      • smurfy says:

I didn’t care for it: too far. But it gives you license to roam.

        • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, they seem overpriced for seats so far away.

This Friday I’m going to see an Amsterdam Mohawks game.

          • smurfy says:

The Amsterdam (NY?) mohawks? Single A?

            • Professor Longnose says:

Yes, Amsterda, NY, although it’s not single A, I don’t think. It’s basically a summer college league. Hunter Pence played for them.

          • smurfy says:

You got fancy usher service, and you got to see the centerfield camera, which was interesting. But oh, the sun was broiling.

  35. Phil C says:

Thank God Freddy got that last out. I nearly fell over when I saw Wade up in the pen.

  36. Phil C says:

A-Pox on A-Rod for making that out. Now Cano needs an HR to keep his streak of games with an RBI going.

  37. Phil C says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not only do I have to listen to NESN but now they have McCarver in the booth with them.

  38. smurfy says:

WOW, the catch and double wow. Freddy must love that.

  39. Professor Longnose says:

6/1. Freddie done did the job.

  40. smurfy says:

    yay, Freddy!

  41. Phil C says:

Great job by Garcia. I didn’t think he had it in him. Hughes needs to top it tonight.

  42. smurfy says:

Stewie hit a true Texas Leaguer, I think.

  43. Phil C says:

    Rally, rally

  44. Phil C says:

I expected to see Logan vs Ortiz. I guess Girardi is trying to save him.

  45. Phil C says:

Damn, Cano’s streak is over. He’ll start a new one tonight.

  46. Professor Longnose says:

    Let’s make this quick.

  47. Professor Longnose says:

Quick DP. One out to go.

  48. Phil C says:

The Fat Lady is doing scales.

  49. Phil C says:

    And now she’s signing!

  50. Professor Longnose says:

Nice win. Anything else they get this series is gravy.

  51. smurfy says:

OK, Professor, you can keep snoozing, comfortably.

  52. Phil C says:

    Chat y’all later.
