Happy Independence Day! We’re officially half way through the Yankees’ season after today’s game. The surprises include, ‘, ‘s, and ‘s dominance, ‘s power surge, and . , , and some extent have been the most disappointing part of the team. The injury bug has also caught up to too many players for our liking this year, we’ve seen Michal Pineda, Andy Pettitte, , , , and deal with the disabled list, amongst guys that were already there in , , and . Fortunately, The Yankees have overcome the odds in the first half, and produced the second best record in baseball. With a handful of elite players expected back in the final half of 2012, mixed with a little bit of optimism for the some new guys like , the team can look forward to the future.

This afternoon, the Yankees have the opportunity to end a 9 game losing streak at Tropicana Field, and in the process prevent the Rays from creeping to 4.5 games behind them. Against their lefty ace , the Yankees will send their own David Phelps. As expected, Price has been arguably the best pitcher in the AL East, but against the Bombers, he’s allowed a 3.93 ERA, and a 1.636 WHIP. Phelps has only made two major league starts in his career, but one was against the Rays back in May, and didn’t allow a run through 4.2 innings. If the Yankees keep hitting lefty starters, and Phelps looks anything like he has this year, I think we can finally break this curse at Tropicana Field. Here is today’s lineup, courtesy of Chad Jennings.

Mark Teixeira 1B

The game starts at 3:10 PM EST on YES. Happy 4th of July! and Go Yankees!

  1. Professor Longnose says:

Second inning and they’re not losing yet.

  2. smurfy says:

Wahoo! Phelps is moving it up and down, 4k’s in two. Great start. He’s a little flaky on the inside corner: when he’s tried it has buzzed ‘em. Not all bad there, though.

    • smurfy says:

Professor, my pessimism is expressed optimistically. Price looks real good.

      • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, Phelps looks very good. Maybe the Yankees can work Price, get his pitch count up.

        • smurfy says:

but that inning was over before it started. 7 pitches? Jeter is better than he gets credit: probably 20% of Price’s pitches.

  3. smurfy says:

don’t care for the rhinestone NY on the Yanks’ caps.

  4. smurfy says:

    Martin almost got him.

  5. smurfy says:

Yeah, Ken S was talking about the complexity of BJ’s swing makes him late too much. Good point, betcha Kevin Long could make him leap ahead.

  6. smurfy says:

Great to see Phelps handle Conrad so well with the breaking ball, after hitting and walking into danger. 55 pitches tho.

  7. smurfy says:

Price v Grandy: 5 fb in a row. #4 Curtis slammed foul, I was sure he would go to slider, but no, and Curtis skimmed the foul pole.

  8. smurfy says:

Joba has been watching his weight, looks trim and powerful.

  9. Professor Longnose says:

Joba would help the Yankees. Their bullpen is already wearing down.

  10. smurfy says:

Alright! Martin picked Rodriguez off, helping David Phelps end a very strong exhibition.

  11. smurfy says:

Hey, hey! Robbie with the first hit.

  12. Professor Longnose says:

Cliff Lee got his first win of the season.

  13. smurfy says:

Tex almost tossed that a little too softly. Got him by a mere whisker.

  14. Michael says:

How is phelpsie doin? Was he as good as the line says he was?

    • Professor Longnose says:

What I saw, he looked really good.

      How’d the interview go?

      • Michael says:

Glad to hear hes doing good. He could be in the mix for a permanent spot next year if he keeps doing well. Interview went good I think. They told me that I would recieve a call and be meeting with the Head Nurse Manager on site and to wait for a call so I suppose that means I made it to the next level? Feels like I just got promoted to AAA. One more level and im in the bigs!

    • smurfy says:

yeah, he mixed his pitches well, changing eye levels. Good movement on his fb, very successful slider.

      • Michael says:

Nice. I heard he was a classic back end 4 pitch starter with a fastball, slider, change, curve but his stuff when I have seen him seemed like if he locates he could be more mid rotation guy. Hopefully they keep him around and give him a legit shot at the rotation this year. Send Garcia back to the pen when CC returns let the damn kids play.

        • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah. Play the kids unless they force you to get rid of them.

          • smurfy says:

Phelps’ handling has been just right: letting him get the feel for it, time to adjust as he goes. Toe in the water, unless you’ve got a Strasburg.

  15. Professor Longnose says:

Piniella on Martin’s butt for not throwing to second.

    • Michael says:

I love having Piniella announce games. He isn’t afraid to publically criticize a player or decision. He got on Martin and Nix already this inning, along with calling out the rest of the infield for not helping Nix. You know no punches are pulled with Sweet Lou

  16. Michael says:

I like him a lot when I see him in interviews and the pitching staff and teammates rave about him and his leadership but at what point to the Yankees consider maybe upgrading at the catcher position? Probably the offseason when hes a free agent but Martin is a black hole offensively and doesnt seem to be throwing as many runners out this year

    • Professor Longnose says:

The OBP is still decent (and it’s great given his batting average). If he combined that with top-notch defense, I’d be on his side. But like this, yeah, they should be looking to upgrade. I don’t know that they can do much before the season ends, though.

      • smurfy says:

His bad back has to be a factor in both his struggles recently (but he’s been sharp today), and in the decision at the end.

  17. smurfy says:

Another great at-bat for Jeter. Might stir something.

  18. Professor Longnose says:

    HIT THE FREAKING BALL!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. smurfy says:

This ump is tight and accurate.

  20. Professor Longnose says:

Teixeira and Rodriguez don’t scare anybody.

  21. smurfy says:

    Woohoo! Texy just wristed that.

  22. Professor Longnose says:

    YAAAAAAA-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Teixeira scared the hell out of that baseball, however.

  23. smurfy says:

maybe Jete and Grandy tired him out.

  24. smurfy says:

    Thump it, Swish!

  25. Professor Longnose says:

    Whoa–stolen base!

  26. smurfy says:

    Experience! Good old, slow Arod.

  27. Professor Longnose says:

Oh, for cryin’ out loud! Umpire’s interference??

  28. Professor Longnose says:

Stole it again but two outs now.

  29. smurfy says:

    ha, ha! I love it.

  30. Professor Longnose says:

Last I remember, Martin’s OBP was .312. Now it’s .299, which is officially crappy, even for a catcher.

  31. smurfy says:

    Love the fight they’re showing.

  32. smurfy says:

God bless America! and a happy birthday

  33. Professor Longnose says:

    This bullpen sucks.

  34. Michael says:

    Carlos Pena…Yankee killer?

  35. smurfy says:

Man, one mistake. Yankees better punch into the Rays’ bullpen, too.

  36. Michael says:

When was the last time Tex had a 2 homer game?

  37. Professor Longnose says:

Uh-oh. Bases loaded. It’s the kiss of death.

  38. Professor Longnose says:

What the hell was he swinging at??

  39. Professor Longnose says:

Four walks. Now that’s a Yankee rally.

  40. smurfy says:

How’s that for an interesting at-bat, Professor?

  41. Professor Longnose says:

    “Joe Maddon has seen enough.”

Baseball has gotten so stupid. You let a guy walk four men in a row because he’s your 8th inning guy? Doesn’t it matter whether the guy is doing the job anymore?

  42. Professor Longnose says:

    Up to The Man.

  43. Professor Longnose says:

If they don’t get that tying run in, I’m gonna be upset.

  44. Professor Longnose says:

    The Man comes through.

  45. smurfy says:

    Wa-de-ho-ha-hooo!

  46. Professor Longnose says:

    The crowd seems happy.

  47. Professor Longnose says:

A little chocolate frosting here, Swishman.

  48. Professor Longnose says:

And the Alphas have gone ahead of the Crimson Hose 3-2.

  49. Professor Longnose says:

    Swisher is really overswinging.

  50. smurfy says:

Oh, Swish flinched. They got 2 more bats. C’mon, Andruw!

  51. smurfy says:

shoulda had Wise pinch hit. Scratch that: lefty/lefty.

  52. Professor Longnose says:

    4 for 53 is .075.

  53. Michael says:

Well it was a good inning. Took the lead so yoou cant be too disappointed

  54. smurfy says:

Ho baby, it’s a barnburner! Gotta hold ‘em now.

  55. Professor Longnose says:

This would be a great time for Robertson to get his groove back.

    • Michael says:

I was just thinking I wonder if Robertson will be able to throw his curve for strikes today. He might still be a little sore from the abdominal strain. Hes been mortal lately

  56. Professor Longnose says:

    Got him!

  57. Michael says:

Good stuff. Hes on his way back

  58. smurfy says:

Great commercial for Lexus there. Has to be the same production as for the Revel Resort ads. Great eye for women, and a good beat.

  59. smurfy says:

If we can win this, it’ll be quite a boost into Boston.

  60. smurfy says:

    Sweet Jete!

  61. Michael says:

    Jeter is a lefty killer

  62. Professor Longnose says:

Game over. The Crimson got hosed.

  63. smurfy says:

The Yankee cheering must drive the Rays batty.

  64. Professor Longnose says:

    Dang. Almost.

  65. smurfy says:

Ohh! I thought Robbie had salted this one away.

  66. Michael says:

Here we go. Hold your breath…

  67. Michael says:

    Got heeem

  68. smurfy says:

    Yeeeeaaahhhhh! Happy 4th of July!

  69. Professor Longnose says:

    All right!

Farnsworth gave it to them, but that’s OK with me.

  70. smurfy says:

Now, THAT was a great game!

  71. franco_trapped_the_ball says:

Among this year’s pleasant surprises, let us not forget Rafael Soriano. A bust last year as a set-up man, he has filled in quite ably for the lost Rivera, no easy feat. He even saved the Yankees’ first win in Tropicana Field in 10 games.
