Yankees-Red Sox postmortem

The Yankees and Red Sox have now played 15 games this season, and last night’s win improved the Bombers to 4-11 in those contests.
The Yankees entered the series hitting .225/.320/.375 against Boston, and .269/.348/.455 on the 2011 season. They leave with a line of approximately .226/.322/.369 against Boston on the year (for some reason Baseball-Reference has yet to update this morning), and a .269/.348/.453 season line.
The Red Sox entered the series hitting .292/.375/.462 as a team against the Yankees in 2011, compared to .279/.349/.458 on the season. They leave hitting .299/.380/.482 (not including last night) versus the Bombers in 2011, and their season line improved to .280/.350/.459.
So the Red Sox outhit the Yankees, but for the most part, the Yankees were able to make their hits count. That the Yankees were able to come into Fenway, having not beaten the Red Sox in a series since May 2010, and take two of three despite starting their two least effective pitchers on the season in two of the games should tell you a lot about the Yankees and baseball, namely that it can’t be predicted, and you’d be foolish to try.
Even more impressive was the work of the Yankee bullpen, which allowed zero runs in the first and third games over 7 2/3 innings. The only Yankee relievers to allow runs in this series were and .
The Yankees managed to boost ‘s ERA against them in 2011 from 1.00 to 1.85. They even managed to win a game started by for the second straight time. Lester, so good against the Yankees in 2010 (2.13 ERA over 25.1 innings), has an unsightly 4.30 ERA against the Yankees in 23 innings.
I’ll try to come back to this post later with individual player splits if B-Ref decides to update at some point, though without looking I can tell you that is hitting ∞/∞/∞ on the season against the Yanks.

Little Dusty is actually hitting .418/.485/.618 on the season against the Yanks, not too far off from my guess of a ∞/∞/∞ line. He came in hitting .439/.519/.634, so I guess we should be happy that he only reached base 7,999 times in this series instead of 8,000.
Also still killing the Yankees? , with a .341/.370/.455 line in 2011. Marco Scutaro, for christ’s sake!
On the Yankees’ side, folk hero seems to be the new Red Sox killer, as he now has a robust .435/.458/.565 line on the season against Boston, and that’s only 7 games plated. improved his season line vs. Boston to .357/.350/.543 while was able to boost his line against the Sox from .227/.306/.386 to .268/.339/.464.
Still not hitting against the Sox? , who now owns a .130/.250/.185 line across 64 plate appearances against Boston in 2011. If these two teams meet in the playoffs, the Yankees are going to have to get more out of Tex than that.

Burnett finally showed up. If he’s smart he won’t get caught up in the “Burnett was good” hoopla and just go about his business like he still sucks because he still sucks and that’s not a bad thing right now because he can only do better and last night was a nice first step. I wouldn’t ordain him a #4 yet. He’s still an overpriced #5 with the talent to be a #3.
Mo should break the saves record assuming the Yanks go a bare minimum 14-13 and Mo saves just half the wins. He was awful in this series and needs to wake up out of whatever stupor he is in when he faces the Red Sox. He put the tying run at the plate in the first game of the series and put the winning run at the plate in the rubber game. He barely saved these games.
The Yanks should start Hughes and Burnett Tuesday and Wednesday respectively and make the decision about which one to take out of the rotation at the end of the homestand. I’m guessing Hughes goes to the bullpen no matter how well he does (unless he spins an 8 IP to CG gem) because he obviously has more recent times experience there than Burnett.
Montero should bat ninth. It was dumb of Girardi to bat him seventh, a prime RBI slot, and it cost the Yanks at least a run for all the men Montero left on base for I think a veteran collects at least one hit. Seventh is too high in the batting order for him to be in. Ease the kid into the bigs.
Time for the Yanks to drop Teixiera to sixth when A-Rod returns. Gardner/Jeter/Granderson/Rodriguez/Cano/Teixiera/Swisher/Martin/Montero (L/R/L/R/L/S/S/R/S, speed in the 9/1/2/3, Martin and Montero could switch places in the batting order.) The Yanks can’t have a 2004 on Giambi like sub-.250 BA oaf (what Teixiera has been for awhile) batting third. He’s batting third only because of his career and salary, and Girardi still thinks it’s 2009-10 when it’s not.
I love Swish but his not knowing how many outs there were – what else when he lays down a bunt with one out and the Yanks down a run to the Red Sox’#2 starter who’d be an ace on most teams? – is inexcusable. Luckily for him the Yanks won the game. Had the Yanks lost he’d have been the goat of the game and that one brainfart could’ve helped to kill the Yanks’ chances of winning the division.
‘Don’t care what anyone says, I want the Yanks to re-sign Chavez to the same contract they signed him to next year. He’d be wise to take it because isn’t it about winning for him at this point? Sure he could start at 3B for San Diego or whoever, but will he have a better chance to win it all with someone else than with the Yanks? I say not. ‘Say he has a good or better 2012 as an everyday player – .270/.350/.480, 27 HR 93 RBI. Is he getting more than two years at age 34 and history of injuries? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe the team he does it for wants to see if he can do it again in 2013 only. I’d love to see him and Nunez share 3B and A-Rod DH.
