As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, ex-Yankee Jason Giambi had a big night on Friday for the Colorado Rockies. He became the 2nd oldest player in MLB history to smack 3 home runs in a single game, the only one older was Stan Musial. The first two blasts came off Phillies emergency starter Kyle Kendrick (Joe Blanton was scratched with elbow stiffness) and the third off reliever Danys Baez. Giambi had been 0-18 since April 10th and doubled his HR total for the season with Friday’s effort.

Former prospect Arodys Vizcaino (Javier Vazquez trade) made an appearance on Baseball America’s Prospect Hot Sheet where they said this:

Why He’s Here: 1-0, 1.29, 2 GS, 12 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 HR, 3 BB, 10 SO
The Scoop: In his first two extended starts since returning from a back injury that forced him to miss a turn, Vizcaino outdueled the Nos. 5 and 6 overall picks from last year’s draft in Kinston’s Drew Pomeranz and Myrtle Beach’s Barret Loux. Vizcaino went seven innings in his start last Friday against Myrtle for his longest outing of the year. He faced just two hitters more than the minimum, striking out six and allowing two hits. Since coming back from his injury, Vizcaino has struck out 15 batters in 17 innings, allowing just six hits.

Between Arodys and Mike Dunn (see below) I think it’s safe to say the Braves picked our pocket on the Vazquez deal. Speaking of Javy, there was speculation before his last start that he might be pitching for his spot in the Marlins rotation, but that was before the news of Josh Johnson’s shoulder inflammation went down and he twirled a shutout against the Rays last night. His spot should be safe for the time being.

In other news, Marcus Thames is on the 15-day disabled list and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks (May 3, strained right quadriceps). From the ‘water is wet’ category, Royals fans are calling for the slumping Melky Cabrera to be dropped in the order. On Saturday, Alfredo Aceves hit the Cubs Marlon Byrd in the face with a pitch, his 2nd hit batsman of the afternoon’s contest. The Cubs’ Carlos Zambrano retaliated by drilling (who else) Kevin Youkilis in the backside. Aceves is starting for the Red Sox in place of Dice-K, who may need Tommy John surgery.

Actually the only thing I hate on that list is melancon. I cant second guess vazquez. Dunn’s bbs are troubling and viz was our third best sp prospect. Plus I thought javy would do well granderson has me fine with losing kennedy and coke is a ml avg swingman type.

Aceves was also stupid, why the reluctance to guarantee money,? Basically lost him for some stupid chest puffing principal.

Do melancon sucks and ace is infuriating, the others I agreed with at the time. U can’t win every trade.
Still waiting for tabata to become the impact player the huggers screamed he would be.

Actually, Melancon bothers me the least. After he was traded, he made comments knocked the fans for not supporting him, and said he wasn’t happy here.

Tabata made similar comments, saying after he was traded that he was happy to be away from the “pressure” of playing for NY.

  2. Duh, Innings! says:

Brian Cashman is a horrible g.m. for the simple fact that he gave C.C. Sabathia an opt-out clause neither Sabathia nor Sabathia’s agent asked for thus put the Yankees in position to have only one lock for the 2012 rotation if Sabathia opts out and signs elsewhere: Burnett in the next to last year of his contract.

If Sabathia opts out and signs elsewhere, the new Yankees g.m. – my guess in-house man Damon Oppenheimer – should not panic and go with this rotation to begin 2012:

    Burnett/Colon/Garcia/Nova/Hughes

Yeah, it’d be “licking wounds” time ,but hey, Sabathia is irreplaceable.

I’d even bring back Wang and see what he has left. He’s not a kid anymore but he isn’t old either.

No trades or signings. You see what this rotation and the farm kids do and you make a trade if you have to. You would most likely have to replace Colon or Garcia if not both and two from everyone under Burnett. You can’t overpay for Mark Buerhle who my guess will remain with the Chi-Sox or get an ace or #2 via trade without giving up the farm (to me all three “Killer Bs” and Montero, that’s right.)

You know your timing sucks as I just started my series of blog posts about former 2010 Yankees.Granted I did Chan Ho Park, who is in Japan. http://ctyankeeblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/former-yankees-chan-ho-park.html

Ha! Well, I’ve been doing these since last year, so I can at least take credit for that.

    BTW-good luck with your blog
