Game Thread: Yanks vs Rangers, 5/6/2011 (8:05PM EST on YES)
The Yanks just finished a rather underwhelming series against the Tigers and now look to rebound against the Texas Rangers. With any luck, a change of scenery will help spark the offense and with even more luck, hopefully the starting rotation will continue its string of solid performances.
“Big news” of the day: Yanks call up Peña, DFA Kevin Russo, and claim RHP Jess Todd. Eric Chavez was sent to the DL with a fractured bone in his left foot – alas, we hardly knew ye.
Tonight’s starting lineup:
Derek Jeter, SS
Nick Swisher, RF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Andruw Jones, LF
Jorge Posada, DH
Russell Martin, C
Curtis Granderson, CF
And taking the mound for the Yanks:
RHP Ivan Nova (2-2, 5.14)

I read yesterday that the Yankees discussed trading Russo in Spring Training, they must not have found any suitors. Not a huge loss, I never really saw him as having much of a chance with the Yankees long term. He is a singles hitter, who was an average fielding second baseman, without a lot of speed. There just isn’t much room for a guy like that with our lineup.

A-Rod traded back to Seattle for prospects in the offseason (salary dump.)
Posada let go after this year for $13.1M cleared.
Nunez made the new starting shortstop and Jeter made a bench player after this year if (Jeter) doesn’t finish 2011 with BA and OBP greater than his 2010 BA and OBP so he’ll retire before or after 2012 and save the Yankees $41M if he retires after this year, $25M if he retires after next. Unless he wants to look like a paycheck collector making $16M, $17M, and $8M being a pinch-hitter/runner and spot DH who can’t hit homeruns.
2012 Yankees
C-Montero in his you better be good for all the time we’ve invested in you year
1B-Teixiera in his you better hit better than .260 for the $20M a year we’re paying you year
2B-Cano
3B-TBD in his walk year
SS-Nunez in his you better be good year
LF-Gardner in his you better be good year
CF-Granderson in his walk year
RF-Swisher in his walk year
DH-Carlos Beltran signed to a one-year deal thus in his walk year
Everyone save Cano is tradeable.
Bench -
Cervelli in his you better be good year
Jeter in his you better be good year
Jones re-signed for another year thus in his walk year
Backup 1B/3B TBD in his walk year
Only two guys are contractually guaranteed to be Yankees after 2012.
Cano is the only one who is going nowhere after 2012.

‘Love how everyone is killing Jeter but washed up, slow, can’t catch, run, or hit Posada and overpaid so-so A-Rod gets passes. And Teixiera can do better than the around .250 he’s batting. All you OBP > BA nerds out there: the Yankees needed a 2-4 run hit out of Teixiera a few innings ago, not a walk.

I know I’m going to regret this but I really can’t take this anymore…
Teixeira is having a better season right now than his final numbers in 2009 and 2010…
Coming into tonights game he has a triple slash line of .253/.390/.566 with a wOBA of .414, in 2010 his previous best season as a Yankee he only posted a triple slash line of .292/.383/.565 with a wOBA of .402. In fact his wRC+ which is runs per plate appearance is 166 right now, and when compared to his 2009 season of 142 is a huge improvement.
Alex coming into tonight’s game had a OPS of .894 with a wOBA of .383, .020 points higher than his .363 wOBA of 2010.
Batting average is a worthless stat, OBP is not a walk statistic as you seem to believe, it is a stat to determine how often you GET ON BASE. I don’t care if you hit .300 if you only get on base at a .300 clip, someone hitting .260 and getting on base at .380 clip is better.

Love to see Granderson hitting the ball as hard as he is this year! He is just such a fire starter in the 2 hole.
